Hmnn..An Unlimited Rod, never seen one stateside, usually built on a Designo Blank, not cheap. Produced by Dream Work Lures, who also makes a sweet punch shot set-up and an A-Rig called the Treasure Trap.

How did you happen across that gem and what are your thoughts on it?
It is a Designo blank. Its the 7'-3" Punch Shot HD model. They are designed by Dream Express Lures and built by Designo. Stumbled across it one day and decided to give it a try as I love to punch. It's the only one I've seen in cork  It's a great rod, the sensitivity you would expect from Designo and a great action for close range punch work. Kinda had to buy it, not often someone makes a high end JDM punch rod!

With how many fingers in front of the trigger are there reels meant to be palmed with? You are supposed to palm them while casting? I passed on one a while ago because they didn't look like something I could cast and palm but I have regrets everytime I see one.

Just one, they sit low on the rod. You dont really "cast" with these, just pitch and flip and yes you palm it the whole time. You can overhand with them, but its awkward. I do sometimes when I need to hit a hole way back in the nasty.

Thanks Teal. I am starting to get muscle memory developed for left hand reeling. The next time one these reels pops up I may have to snag one to try out.

Any suggested upgrades?

Carbontex is a must. After that whatever you feel like. I punch with mine and ended up going to drilled driveshafts for Steez Bolts as I kept stripping the threads on the shaft. Spool and handle at your discretion. I run mostly swept 80mm handles and use a Blue Emblem for a spool.

Bumping this thread with a question. What reels have compatible internals? Is there a resident expert on these?
I've got a TD-S 105HL and plan on a TD-Z 105HL that I want to maintain with spare parts reels. I know Daiwa made a number of these types of reels. Just from what I know so far looking at schematics:

There are the Procaster x 105HL and Procaster z 105HL. Then there are the rare TD-X 103HSDL and TD-S 105HL. These are the same platform as the Procasters but get a mulitstack drag like what is found in the TD-Z 105HL and TD-X 105HL instead of the single stack drag, new side/top plates and some nicer timings. The righty TD-S 105H even has a TD-Z esque shape to it based on the righty Procasters but with new side plates and face plate.

Then there are TD-X 105HL and TD-Z 105HL which look like the same platform but in aluminum or magnesium so I assume those parts are compatible with each other. They also appear to use the same drive gear and pinion as well as numerous other parts as the TD-S 105HL and TD-X 105HSDL despite the latter two sharing frames with the Procaster lefties.

I don't know how the reels stack up in an evolution of designs but from a tiered order we have the Procasters on the bottom and the TDZ and TDX on top with the TDS and the other TDX in the middle with parts from both platforms. As a family of reels all internals might be compatible with different part numbers on things like the main gear due to the different drag arrangement.

There was also a TD-S 103HSDL and TD-X 103HSDL. The TD-S 105HL might have been the JDM reel with the TD-S 103HSDL being the USDM reel. Pictured is the TD-X 103HSDL and TD-S 103HSDL.
