Evergreen Stingray 66 - The forgotten rod

Post by hungry_cow » Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:05 pm

So before last season I got an Evergreen TKDC-66MLBF-Pro Stingray 66. Tackle Tour has an old review up on it but you never hear much about it. Let me tell you this rod is special! No it isn't as light as some newer rods but is perfectly balanced and feels amazing in hand. It has the "it" factor in spades! I swear it is more sensitive than my Super Eiger. It has a stinger tip but it doesn't fish much different than any other moderate fast action rod. I have been using it with 10lb braid mostly for shakey heads, finesse jigs, ned rigs, anything like that and it is absolutely unbelievable. Also makes an amazing rod for small topwaters like a Rico. It is also the best rod I have used for smaller cranks. Just and unbelievably sensitive, great casting, and flat out fun rod. Not sure why it doesn't get way more love than it does. Seems fairly easy to source from Japan auctions as they are always for sale and not too expensive.

Great observations! I've had mine for a long time and still thoroughly enjoy using it even with all the new stuff coming out. Will never sell it. I'm curious though how the TKIC-65MLST Black Briar fishes since it supposedly has the Stingray's genes.

I agree completely. My main intent with the Stingray, was to use it for split shotting soft plastics on 8lb flouro.
Triggerless baitcaster that when paired with a small reel is extremely fun
Very sensitive with a crisp feel and in open water it has enough power to keep you out of trouble.
On the expensive side of BFS rods at about 500, but well worth it.
Speaking of the versatility try throwing a jerk bait 😉.
BFS or not
Very special rod indeed

This is the rod that got me to really like the "stinger tip." The stinger tip on this rod is great for drop shotting and ned rigs and small jigs. I now have 2 other rods (MB models) that also have the stinger tip. Really adds some sensitivity to a rod.

The utility of this rod is nearly any type of technique within its weight range.

It makes the spinning rod replacement assuming you have the right reel and spool. It is special in how it works equally well with bottom contact as well as moving or treble hook baits in the weight range. Like I said it isn't the lightest but very crisp and perfectly balanced.

I always wanted one for the triggerless design and they can be found pretty cheap on the auctions. I went the fenwick route instead and havent looked back but occasionally get the urge to grab one, lol.

Not forgotten to everyone, i still have 4 Kaleido Designo rods in my rotation and they get most use in spring and autumn. One of then has a spiral wrap. I even have two old school Temujin Super Grand Slam rods in rotation.
