The HYUGA! I almost forgot that I once owned a 7'2 M Hyuga. I loved that rod, was a sweet combo with the Tat SLP
The 72H has one of the best power/taper combos I have ever gotten my hands on. It's the best of both worlds in terms of reliable hooksets and fearless fights/landings. It's such a nice rod for all sorts of medium/heavy cover presentations, it's strong as all hell, and when it's fully loaded it just launches lures with a flick of the wrist. So so much fun.

Very nice! Here's my weapon of choice for swimbaits in that 2-8oz range.

Rod: Deps Huge Custom
Reel: Megabass Lin Origin 10 with the Drt 95mm Handle
Lure: Drt Tiny Klash

20200422_161021-480x640.jpg
Which rod model do you have? I really like the H3S-76RF AND THE H3S-81RF
The H2S-75RF is a completely different animal....
I'm using the 76rf. Thinking about getting another rod though. Something that would be better at tossing 8oz baits and higher.
The 76RF is my favourite. Both of the H3S can go up to 10oz. but at some point becomes a risky game.
I do have the Strong Mind that can cast up to 2Kg (70oz.). I have casted the Savage Heart Trout weighting at 24oz but is hard on you.
On the contrary, 12oz on the Strong Mind is surprisingly easy.

That 70 oz blows my mind. So you can cast a 5 lbs bass as live bait?

Here’s the current favorite combo. Evergreen Grand Stallion GTX with Conquest 200DC.
Absolutely sick combo. How are you liking the new DC?

Love the new DC, Conquests are absolutely my favorite reels, and I think the new DC’s are the best of them all. I actually really like the super low gear ratio model for slowing down baits. Plus the winching power is supreme. The 200DC has been around a little while but adding another 100DC (just released) for the summer. I’ve got a spare spool for the 200DC and switch back and forth between braid and fluoro as needed. It’ll hold plenty of 25# fluoro and has pretty much replaced the Conquest 300/400 size for me for the time being.

Awesome to hear! I have an older Calcutta 201DC on an X4 Destruction, and I adore that combo. I plan on picking up a new Conquest 201DC, and maybe even a 101DC.

What is the line capacity on the new 200/01 Conquest DC? I've seen conflicting figures advertised.

On the 200DC I’ve seen 20#/100m listed and it’s probably pretty accurate. Even with 25# fluoro (I used mostly Sunline and JDM Seaguar which are more like typical 20# dia) or 65# braid there’s absolutely no way you’re ever going to spool it on a cast.

I tossed the balam 300 which is 6oz on the huge custom and it'll toss it but it wasn't as comfortable tossing on my friends drt/tulala andre. The andre rod made tossing the balam feel like I was tossing a 2oz bait.

There weren't many dedicated swimbait blanks available in the early days of Huddleston. I had to take a production rod blank that I liked and modify the rest to my liking for it to become my dedicated Hudd rod. This Powell Max is 7'11", rated for 5-8 ounces, and it has a little faster action that I prefer for heavy single hook soft swimbaits (8 and 10 inch Hudds). Its a little stiff for most treble hook baits. I had my builder get rid of the split grip and add a full cork rear and a hook keeper. You can't tell that it didn't come from the factory that way. I like the guide train, and it's simple black wraps with a little metallic blue and silver near the foregrip. My smaller hands like a low profile swimbait reel like this Lexa 300H. It has four handle bearings and a bearing added under the cast control cap to make it nice and buttery.
We have been getting fewer and fewer trout stocking in SoCal over the last few years. I've adapted well to what I'm given, but the bigger swimbait rods haven't been making it out as much as they used to. :( The guys in SoCal line up several boats deep on key swimbait spots after a trout stocking and fight for turns. It's pretty lame.

Is that usually effective? My state stocks a a pair of tiny ponds near my house and over the last two seasons I have been hitting them day of and/or 1-2 days post stocking and have never noticed much difference in hit rate on a 68Special as compared to any other winter day.

The mocking laughter of the powerbait-boys is like water off a duck's back at this point, but I am starting to wonder if I am wasting my time.

Not usually very productive to fish big baits behind someone! I won’t usually do it unless I know something they don’t.

You can cast as much as your body allows.... That is really the limit. The harder part is to hold the spool with your thumb while casting something massive.
The rod was designed with two things in mind: Cast massive baits and manage to set the hook with those baits. The second might seem stupid but when a bass barely kisses your lure on the pause and you want to set the hook on a 20oz bait, most probably your rod will have a hard time moving the bait fast and far enough. Well, the Strong Mind will not. :big grin:

The Huge Custom has a taper that is very particular. I like it and found it to be very efficient both in casting(depending on your casting stroke) and keeping fish hooked.
With that said, I can understand your preference for any other rod. The HC tip seems to feel stressed at 4oz and feels the same with 8oz and still casts 10oz or 1oz. Weird indeed.
Also, if you are doing a lot of open water and long casting, for sure there are better options out there.
If you are fishing docks or very close to steep walls or any other structure/cover that needs precise placement of the lure... the HC in my opinion is hard to beat.

Oh I love my HC. I use it in open water and tight places. I just want another rod for magnum type baits. Have you tried out any of the new swimbait rods from deps?
