Morethan 1000xh - Coffee Grinder

Post by RMCatchNrelease » Tue May 19, 2020 6:41 am

I got a Morethan 1000xh last September from Japan Lure Shop. Never really got to put it to work before the winter. I was throwing jerkbaits last week and twice it engaged during a cast. What was one of the smoothest reels I own is now possibly the worst.

Even more frustrating, the Morethan is a model Diawa's requires be returned to the factory for any warranty or repair work to the gear set.

On the parts diagram, there is a notation stating the reel must be submitted for repair. See below that was sent to me from JLS. Never seen that before. ](*,)

I took the reel apart and see no damage to the gear teeth. The pinon gear where the spool pin engages is a bit chewed up but I wouldn't think it would make it so rough.

Going to be costly to get it fixed and very bummed. I only wanted this teel for the bad ass bronze gears that are now shot. They also cost 13,000 yen!

Any suggestions?

Ouch. I have never had a reel engage on the cast that wasn't the result of a flipping switch being left on. I can only imagine what that does to the pinon.

You could probably swap a set of steez gears in the meantime to make it feel smooth again while you decide whether to replace the bronze set. I'm not sure how the morethan clicking drag is setup but you may be able to adapt it to the steez gear set.

The note (about repair only) has been the case for a fair while now.
But check with Plat, they seem to be able to order/supply gear sets despite that note...

And it's not 13000.
It's 6500 for the drive and pinion gear set.

That bronze alloy is good and bad onto itself. Self lubricating to "a degree" and absolutely swallows it's tongue in an instant.

Never engage while mid cast - the mechanics of what's going on only to shock load that pinion and main is asking for trouble.

You can't buy the steez A, or Morethan gear sets even from plat. Both reels need to be sent in for warranty because as far as I know you can't remove the main gear off of the shaft. I tried to remove them both and switch a while back, and both had the same issue. I wanted to buy the 8.6 bronze morethan gears for my Steez A. I haven't had this issue with any other reels except these two, and both have magseal.

True. But you have to grind, or file the shaft down to get it off as per this guys directions. That’s something I wasn’t willing to do once I found I couldn’t just swap them, and found that I couldn’t just buy them from plat.

I guess I should have said not easily removable. My bad.

I think what he's getting at it is it varies from reel to reel... not particular to any reel model.
Not an issue on my Morethan...

Right on! Both my steez A and Morethan had that same problem. I've swapped, or removed gears on 20+ of my Daiwa reels and these were the only two that ever did that. I tried pretty hard on both before figuring out I would have to remove some metal, and said forget it.

I have many sets of gears I have collected over the years.

This is the first time I've had to ran into the send for repair. Usually just send the part numbers to Plat or JLS. As for price, I would love it to be only 6,500 yen. Howerver, unless it says different in the Japanese text, it has always been priced per part on their diagram.

The gear came off the shaft fine. I cleaned with an ultra sonic, hit the burs on the pinon with a light buff, and greased pretty heavy. It just has ticks but seems not to be in an sort of pattern.

I did not engage the reel purposefully. In fact, it can remember another reel doing it twice is one short morning trip. Perhaps my big hands hit the drag star but again, I've never done this with other small reels like a PX68s or Zondas.

I had something similar happen. In my situation it was early spring, I had just backed all my drags and brakes off to essentially nothing. Same thing with the tension knob as that is how I keep my reels during the winter. I had my TDZ R+ and went to make a cast and it squealed something terrible and it just just stopped mid cast. Totally my error. I sent it in for service and the gears were not harmed much at all but it needed a new pinion bearing. Once that was changed ($10 part) the reel feels 90% better. I am guess a new gear set in addition the pinion bearing would make it feel like new. If you suspect the gears are fine I would start with a pinion bearing replace.
