Poison Ultima 5-Piece
Poison Ultima 5-Piece
Anyone own one of these and have any feedback?
Re: Poison Ultima 5-Piece
Just to follow-up, I picked up the 266L-5 Spinning rod. This thing is stunning top to bottom. Compares very similarly action-wise to the widely loved NRX 822DSR and I’d say is a hair lighter powered (I’d call it a G Loomis 1+ power for those familiar with their ratings). Will be an extremely fun rod and it’s the most balanced and lowest swing-weight spinning rod I’ve ever seen, I’m blown away. Not necessarily apples to apples per se but the Ultima 266-5 is 77 grams (!!!!!), Steez RD 67ML+ is 80 grams (!!!!!), Conquest 742S is 96 grams, NRX 822DSR is 102 grams. This thing is a feather. Not quite as powerful as the Steez RD but both are true gems.
As far as I have researched the new 5-piece Ultimas are using the newest Toray M40X for the spiral X core that runs from handle to Berry and Toray T1100G for the power-X that only runs from the tip section overlapping into the Berry. Shimano calls out both of these nanoalloy materials specifically by name. Its very noticeable in the pattern on the blank. It’s a really interesting build concept they have going here, with the decreasing section length as you go toward the tip to “move” the action faster than their standard Ultima blank designs. This is ACTUALLY a fast action Ultima, not the more parabolic bend deep into the backbone that the standard lineup is more widely known for.
I’ve got my eye on the new 7’4” MH+ but really wishing they would have come out with a heavy-power rod like the 172H in this series. Count me in on the 5-piece concept they’re developing, it’s very very well done. Admittedly I wanted a rod I *could* travel with easily but that’s not the sole reason I wanted to try the new Ultima 5-piece concept.

Sounds and looks pretty slick!
Re: Poison Ultima 5-Piece
Thanks guys. The new 7’4” MH+ is very high in my radar for the March release. It looks like they added a bit of length to the 172H but kept the lure rating the same but with RF action instead of F. On the application list they match very closely too but the 74MH+ is certainly more targeted at Lake Biwa Carolina rigging and swimjig styles. For guys that like a longer jig rod this might be worth a shot compared to the 172H.
