Destroyer evoluzion 2018

Post by KMcClure » Fri Feb 26, 2021 6:16 am

Looking for a megabass rod for throwing shallow to medium diving crankbaits. Most baits will be 1/2oz with some being 3/8. No deeper than 10’. I was looking at the f3-68ti ultimate griffon but nervous it may be too light. Can anybody chime in on this rod or any other rods that would be good

I'd probably look at the Javelin

I have a javelin but to me it’s too heavy for that. I’d also prefer something 6’8”-7’2”. I have most of the 17 destroyers and none of them excel at this for me. I do use my javelin for lipless and deeper cranks

The Elseil models might be what you're looking for. Haven't tried any of the newer ones but the X4 I had worked great for these.

What kind of cover will you be primarily fishing around?

Over top of grass but not in it. Also some rock and scattered wood. Nothing crazy that I need a heavier rod than normal. All crankbaits will be 1/2oz and under but mostly 1/2oz.

If you can find a black jungle shallow fast moving special I believe you would be happy

I'm a little sauced up right now, so I'll have to reply again this weekend. That said, I have a C40 Elseil from the first run. 2014 maybe. As far as I recall the ratings are perhaps dead nuts to the '18 models.

Anywho, that is a 4.5 power and I use it pretty much exclusively for 3/8oz swim jigs with 3.5"-4" swing impacts in open water with moderate grass at the most. Hope that helps.

This may come as a surprise given the way megabass describes the rod, but I’ve found the p5 dark sleeper does a darn good job with shallow to medium cranks. Pretty versatile rod and worth checking out

I agree. The Dark Sleeper feels a lot more moving bait oriented than what a lot of guys expect. It does a great job with swim jigs, vibrating jigs, spinner baits, and definitely handles square bills and mid sized cranks nicely.

How is the taper on the dark sleeper? I don’t care for glass for cranking but also don’t like too fast of an action. Like I mentioned earlier I’ve tried cranks on my destroyer 110 special and my orochi xx jerkbait special and both seemed to fast. Is the dark sleeper noticeably slower than those two?

I would order it and make up your own decision. There is zero feedback on that particular rod. I say go for it and give some feedback of your own. I have three rods lined up for 1/4 to 3/8 oz. cranks to purchase. First either the Evolution you listed. Second is the P-5 Z-Crank Eisel and third is the new Steez Machine Gun Cast type-1. I have to purchase all 3 to fill my niche for shallow cranks. You might as well order it why not? Make your own opinion? As far as 1/2oz divers that's for you to decide as well as myself after the purchases. Gary is spot on for me when I ask him about a rod

I have the dark sleeper and to me, the taper is a fast action similar to the fast action of "U.S. models." I think that the taper would be similar in action to the fast taper of the Gloomis MBR models.

I haven't fished with either of the other models as a comparison for you. However, to answer the original question of fishing cranks in the 3/8 to 1/2 range to around 10', I like the Elseil models for those.
