For those of you picking up this reel are you going with the 7.8 or the 8.6, and why?

8.6 for me. I want the speed and with my trout fishing, speed is way more important than power

I ordered the 8.6, like a higher gear ratio for most of my fishing

I'm going 7.8. Ever since having my Millionaire CT (7.2) I have been okay with a slower reel. It isn't crazy slow, but closer to a 6 year ratio. The Millionaire is 26.4" and the new Conquest is just under 28", so I think the 7.8 would be fine. I like to think the slightly slower/regular ratio gears will last longer too.

Man I am glad you posted this, I too ordered the the 7.8, never experiencing anything above 8.1. What is the max gear ratio of a pimped out Abu? Saito does look like he is having a fit everytime he is reeling his bait in. Wonder if I can get Japan Tackle to change up my order?

Having grown up when high speed was considered 18" per turn, I really prefer reels in the low to middle 20" range. If I were to get myself a new Conquest, I'd go with the lower ratio since it's good all around for many species whether it's bass, trout, or panfish. I fish steelhead as well and the extra torque helps winch them angry SOBs in good.

A whole lot of fish have been caught with a 5.8:1 Calcutta 100 and many reels that were slower than that.

I got turned off of high ratios by trying the 9.1 Zillion TWS. Was already a big, 36mm spool reel, and recovered over 40 inches per turn. My always felt like there was no torque, even with a 100mm handle, once baits got over 3/8. I still would like to buy the 5.5 gears and turn it into an A-rig/swimbait rod.

Back to the Conquest, I think the 7.8 has plenty of speed, still a pretty good IPT for smaller baits/lighter lines.

A good article on the differences of the 17 and 23. Scrounged from our friendly neighborhood reel tester.

Thank you for the post, it's very informative and I can't wait to try out the new Conquest 23 BFS reel and see how it works on my new Zenaq Spirado Blackart B65 Finesse casting rod that's currently on the way from Japan!

The good ole TRT zealot also added some sad news. The right hand HG, the one I want, isn't supposed to release until May 2023 now.

I hope the 23 Conquest is better than the 17 Conquest BFS. I’ve owned one for years and thought is was as good as it got until I bought a Millionaire CT 70. The 17 Conquest is literally a toy compared to the Millionaire. Just wish Daiwa would release a BFS Ryoga. If anyone wants to buy a 17 Conquest BFS with avail spool I know a guy🤣🤣

A toy? Please elaborate more......
The Millionaire CT is just a Millionaire with spacer to adopt a smaller dia. spool which the the platform itself is so outdated.....
I have owned most if not all of the best variants of this platform, naming I'ze Light, Ringa SSS and the Monoblock. They are still fine to today standard but the later Conquests are more advanced.

I really love the Millionaire platform, the current iteration has been around since 1997 IIRC. While it is a dated design, it does open up a lot of options to create your own unique frankenreel. Parts interchangeability with the Alphas/Pixy really helps too.
