Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
Side by side to the new Alphas SV TW, I much prefer the casting profile of the CT 70 - effortless casting and when dialed up to 15 against stiff headwind it still gets good distance.
I have the 7.2 ratio CT70, and it handles shad plugs and Z1/z2 just fine, but the z3 and tiny blitz DR definitely pulls a lot harder. How would those tiny gears hold up to that kind of abuse? I might pick up a 6:1 speed for the deeper finesse cranks.
Is there another Daiwa I should be looking at that has a similar spool/brake profile to the CT SV 70?

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think your 7 speed CT is just fine if you don't mind reeling slow.

Yeah I would like a backup though - would you recommend another CT SV 70?Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 5:26 pmPersonally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think your 7 speed CT is just fine if you don't mind reeling slow.

Sure, grab another in lower gear ratio. As long as you're not pulling anything to heavy or with mass bills, you should be good. Anything else I would recommend is going to be a larger platform with a spool swap. Honestly, I think the Alphas CT is the best out of the box Daiwa has put out at a reasonable price in a long time. Especially considering it's versatility.reason162 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 15, 2023 9:46 amYeah I would like a backup though - would you recommend another CT SV 70?Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 5:26 pmPersonally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Re: Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
The Alphas CT is an awesome reel, and everyone here knows how much I love that Alphas platform....but since I bought my Alphas TW, I sold all my og Alphas platforms. The gears in the Alphas TW are dimensionally identical to the newest Zillion G, which has a huge main gear. So there's a significant increase in the torque compared to the Alphas CT. I also have 2 of the Tatula 80 reels, which are the basically the same reel, and I actually throw the Jackall Bling (5/16) and a shallow Shad Rap #7 (1/4 oz) with the Tat XH, which is 8.1:1. Last weekend, I was tossing a 1/2 oz spinnerbait with big double willows on the Tat 80. It worked, but I decided I want a Tat in 7.1 for that type of bait (just ordered it last night).
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I need to try the new Alphas TW apparently. People seem to really like them.hoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 5:10 amThe Alphas CT is an awesome reel, and everyone here knows how much I love that Alphas platform....but since I bought my Alphas TW, I sold all my og Alphas platforms. I now own 7 reels and counting on that frame- 2 Alphas TW, 1 Alphas TW shallow, 1 Gekkabijin, 1 Alphas Air TW and 3 Tatula 80.Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 3:13 pmI need to try the new Alphas TW apparently. Re: Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
I have 2 CT SV 70s and they are my absolute favorite reels I've used. I have one 6.3 spooled with 10lb J Fluoro Samurai for smaller cranks and the 7.2 has 20lb Smackdown on it so I can use smaller (sub-1/2oz) topwaters and wake baits along with small cranks/finesse jerkbaits just by changing my leader. One is on a 6'10 M moderate Ark and the other is on a 6'9 ML Tatula Elite. I guess an SV TW is next for me, but like you, those Alphas are the cat's meow and I don't see how it could be improved upon too much.reason162 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 15, 2023 9:46 amYeah I would like a backup though - would you recommend another CT SV 70?Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 5:26 pmPersonally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I, personally, love the Level Crank on the 6.3. It's a perfect match and casts a mile.

I feel pretty neutral towards mine, but it could be a lemon, who knows. There's nothing wrong with it just feels a little sluggish on the cast (I've purged the bearings with lighter fluid then added a drop of TSI 321 - same thing I do to all my reels), a little raspy on the retrieve (I cleaned and regreased the gears), and just not as fun throwing 1/4oz crankbaits as the CT SV 70.Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 3:13 pmI need to try the new Alphas TW apparently. How does your Tat 80 compare in casting distance in the wind to your Alphas TW with lightish baits?hoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 17, 2023 6:50 amI now own 7 reels and counting on that frame- 2 Alphas TW, 1 Alphas TW shallow, 1 Gekkabijin, 1 Alphas Air TW and 3 Tatula 80.
And do you feel the Alphas shallow gains much casting performance in that department vs the regular spooled Alphas?
Re: Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
Yeah I have mine paired to the poison adrena 67BFS - the most perfect setup for throwing ixi/z1/z2/weighted #4 shad raps on 8lb fluoro - I bought the rod/reel for small jerkbaits but it cranks so well.Drew03cmc wrote: ↑Mon Apr 17, 2023 6:55 amI have 2 CT SV 70s and they are my absolute favorite reels I've used. My only concern is the tiny gears wearing out and I can't find replacements since it's a discontinued reel. Have to stock up on a 6:1 and look for spare gears lol
Re: Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
I'm sure we can stumble upon spare gears somewhere. I want to try one of the new Alphas SV TW 800s.reason162 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 17, 2023 9:22 am

Yeah, I've been told that the casting and braking feels a bit restricted, especially with lighter stuff. Not as versatile as the CT unless you get the KTF spool.reason162 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 17, 2023 9:19 amI feel pretty neutral towards mine, but it could be a lemon, who knows. Re: Alphas CT SV 70 - Finesse Cranking
The CT SV has a 30mm spool while the newer SV TW has a 32mm spool correct?
