Midstrolling
Midstrolling
Hello fellas,
I'm in the market for the best midstrolling rod possible. However, according to diferents stores and some rods named itself as midstrolling special ( solid tip ) there is a lit of bit of confusion regarding to the tip.
There are ones with tubular tips and ones with solid tip... I don't know which one would be the best suitable for this technique.
In addition, UL and L powers seems to be the more suitable. The problem is the weight range is normally very limited. However, there are also some rods which are UL/ML more powerfull that would fit better for my intended purposes fishing strippers in rivers using 1/4 and 3/8 of weight.
I have some options already checked;
New posion glorious 24
Shimano poison ultima
Raid japan fixer _ sidekick
Nories road runner structure mid strolling
Orion Free Will
Or maybe some of the news 24 evergreen the willow & gaza
I'm totally messed up.
I'd appreciate so much if only somebody could help with this matter.
Thanks in advance.
Regards

Re: Midstrolling
Kyoya Fujita uses Jackall Driftfry and Daiwa Steez Real Control rods, as I recall 61L and 65ML models, none of them has ST. And he is really good at this technique.
Re: Midstrolling
RAID has a few videos on that internet video website. I'm finding with RAID, the casting rods are very versatile, the spinning rods are very technique specific. I tried the Power Nose, excelling hanging jig rod, isn't perfect for strolling. I was going to try the Stride for that because very clear water and long distance casting requirements make some of the shorter spinning rods make for a rough sale.

Re: Midstrolling
I'm a bit confused. You're looking to fish up to 3/8 oz on an ultra light / light powered spinning rod? In river current? I enjoy strolling, but with lighter weight. I prefer solid tips for this technique. Lightly shaking the presentation while reeling is accomplished easier imo, plus the softer tip section allows the fish to pick up the bait without being alerted as quickly that you are on the other end. At any rate, I'd probably be looking at a ML+ or Medium with a solid tip in your case. This way you have a softer tip for loading and working the bait, but some solid reserve power for those bigger river fish.
Re: Midstrolling
I responded to your post in the PG thread. I'm with Hogsticker, those jighead weights are heavy. I'm not too experienced with jighead weight relative to depth just yet but those weight heads are going to really make you have to move the baits fast to maintain a set depth. 1/4oz is probably not too bad but it'll be deep. I fish lightweight heads and fish the baits very slowly horizontally with a lot of rolling from Ryugi Vespa heads and Owner Range Rollers. Though, I'm fishing the upper portions of the water column, hoverstrolling. I know Kyoya has mentioned using 1/8oz heads for the Driftfry Mellow(?) and Sakamata shad but I don't know how deep he is fishing the bait.
I also mentioned in the other thread about the Shimano rods with Excite Tip. Easy to generate the shaking motion in the tip to tap the slack on the retrieve. Amplitude and frequency of the tip movements are easily controlled and there isn't much fatigue on the end user. At least compared to using a regular spinning rod. Knowing what I know now, I would think solid tip rods would be good for strolling too.

Thank you sirs,
The river is very shallow max 9meters in the deepest area. Normally I fish in 3/5meters but If there is a lot of current I need to use heavy weights.
According to what I read I totally agree with you regarding to solid tips it's seems to be more suitable for this technique. However, the Japanese midstrolling specialist won the tournament without using solid tips...
I still don't know which rod to choose...

Re: Midstrolling
I keep two rods rigged for strolling, An MB P5 Whippet and an MB P5 Kirasame which is solid tipped. One for the hover and one for the mid. Still experimenting with each for the different techniques. I tend to just hit my spot lock and fire away, neither rod is used in current.

Re: Midstrolling
The majority of folks doing this in Japan are using solid tips. Again, it assists with the action and movement of the bait. Plus the upper section of the rod will load up on the cast, as well as the hook set. There isn't a wrong or right answer here. Whatever type of tip you choose, just make sure it's not overly stiff or powerful. I agree the Excite Tip rods should be a good choice. Daiwa makes some nice solid tip rods in the JDM Steez lineup as well.
Re: Midstrolling
Meanwhile Daiwa’s high-end Steez rods designed for forward-facing sonar techniques, Live-Scope Focused rods will be available in US!

Re: Midstrolling
We were set up with Daiwa at the Classic. We got these rods there. It's my understanding that the VERY few that came in were earmarked for the Classic only. They won't be "bringing them in" so to speak.

Re: Midstrolling
OK! Thank you for the clarification! I thought Daiwa did the same thing as Shimano by bringing the Ultima line up.
Re: Midstrolling
I don't think this is true - solid tips collapse easily and what you want is the opposite to get that rolling action going with minimal effort. Shimano's Excite Top is tubular with added mass at least according to their website.Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 5:20 pmThe majority of folks doing this in Japan are using solid tips.
Re: Midstrolling
A lot of the Raid guys are using solid tips. JohnnyA mentioned taking a look at Raid's youtube videos. I've watched several, good stuff in there. Think their Fish Roller videos. They might have had a stolling 101 video too but I don't recall if it was from Raid or someone else when I was taking the deep dive into the subject.reason162 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2024 5:00 pmI don't think this is true - solid tips collapse easily and what you want is the opposite to get that rolling action going with minimal effort. I think you're taping the slack so lightly that solid tips wouldn't have a chance to "collapse". The excite top rods definitely have more mass on the end. I have the Adrena 268ul-2 and the tip diameter is 1.8mm, larger than a typical UL from Shimano.
Re: Midstrolling
I think you can do it with any rod - I've mid and bottom strolled with my expride 610ML for years - but the Excite Top and similar setup seems optimal. Raid is nice but I don't think they're in the same R&D league as Shimano/Daiwa, esp not when it comes to such a technique specific setup. The big 2s got actual pros on the team and the whole strolling game has been a thing in Japan for over a decade.
