Fantastic sight.
If you read the article properly they did try to release it, but it stayed up and beached itself again. The other fish also died.
I guess that pair came up to die? Plus the change from deep dark, high pressure water (cold), to warmer surface water may well have damaged them lethally.

i read something somewhere, were these things tend to be seen near death.
i thought they just washed up on shore or were too weak to go back into the deep. never thought they would beach themselves.
