23lb Mirror Carp Christens New Rod
Hi all,
I collected my latest custom build a few weeks ago and used it for the first time this afternoon on a visit to my syndicate water.
Lots of activity with fry constantly breaking the surface. My thoughts were obviously pike. Tried a number of lures all to no avail. I put on a 36g floating Salmo Slider and started to work the lure. On my fifth cast I had a hit at about thirty yards. Instantly I set the hook and for the next ten minutes didn't get to see the fish, for that time I thought I'd be setting a lake record for pike. In a water averaging 30" deep with nowhere to dive, the only thing the fish could do was charge around laterally. The runs took it through a bed of lillies and through and around some sunken trees. After what seemed an eternity I managed to slip the net under my prize. To say I was shocked would be an understatement.
Here are a couple of pics.

Nice fish! I have to learn how to catch carp. I have some huge ones in my pond, but have yet to catch one.

Wow.. what a pig.
I have had sightings from neighboors of a giant carp thats looks gold in my pond out back but havent seen carp in this water before. I want to catch her and release her somewhere else to get her out a Bass/Pike dominated pond. Someone released her here.

Know of any good ways to catch them? They are always against the shore line, but will scatter very quickly when you go anywhere close to them. We have some that look 25-35lbsGAMEOVER wrote:Wow.. what a pig.

Can't beat doughballs for carp. I have caught 35 pound carp on 6 pound test in my lake. Doughballs are great with some cornmeal mixed in. Also, chum some corn (inside the can, with holes punched in it). Then come back in about an hour...oatmeal balls work great too. Just add water and make some, hook em up and hang on!

Monstrous Fish SH!!! WTG!
Re: 23lb Mirror Carp Christens New Rod
Man those Mirrors are butt fugly but fight well and are usually very agressive feeders that will comb a lot of water.
BTW, I caught a lot of standard Euro Carp in the Cal Delta fishing cut makerel and sardines. These big guys will corral small baitfish and also feed regularly on crayfish. Little known to most fishers.
Anyway, congrats!

My wife just caught this 15LB carp in a local river using a purple ozark smoke 4" Senko on a drop shot.

Nice fish. I caught a carp once on a spoon, hit it just like a pike would have done. On a jerkbait like that is amazing!! well done!
What kind of rod is this, it is a spiral wrapped rod?

The rod is one of my own designs. It's built on a Harrison blank, spiral wrapped using Seymo 247S guides. I supply the blank and the spec's for guide spacings and handle, my builder sticks it all together. As you can see, it works a treat.Fbass wrote:Nice fish. Is that the same design spec that another builder had to re-build for you a couple of times because he thought he knew what you wanted more than you did?

Catching carps on lures is not as common as catching them on boillies...that fish must have been very hungry. Great catch.

No, this is a totally new spec. The ones that caused problems were both ultra lights, built by two different builders some years ago.dragon1 wrote:Is that the same design spec that another builder had to re-build for you a couple of times because he thought he knew what you wanted more than you did?
Luckily I now have a builder that will stick rigidly to my specifications.
