10/01/07--First Bass over 3 lbs in weeks

Post by Lightninrod » Mon Oct 01, 2007 1:26 pm

Catching any Bass over 2/10 has eluded me for the last several weeks. Fished 4 different ponds, a 600 acre lake, and a couple of hours on the Ocmulgee River over those weeks and nothing over a 2/10.

Went back to my former boss's walk-around pond this afternoon with Bluebird skies, clear water, temps in the mid-80s, and wind gusts up to 20 mph. After about a half hour, I felt the thump of a bite on a bait Randall(Lake Varner guide) had shown to me a few weeks ago. It's a 1/8 oz Shakey Head jig and a Zoom Trick Worm. Now, I know most of ya'll have been using these for months if not years but they are new to me.

That thump was a 5 lb, 15 oz, 23" Bass. Felt pretty darn good getting her to the bank with BPS's 8 lb fluro.

Thanks again Randall for the tip!

I was thinking that we were WAY overdue on some bass pics from Lightninrod :D Looks like fishing has slowed a little. Same here.
Good fish Dan.

Nice fish Dan! The trickworm is my number one worm for the shakey head. Alot of people use the smaller finesse worms, but I've had better luck with largemouths and spots with the trickworm.

By the way, did you go fishing with Randall? At Varner? I live pretty close to Varner but haven't fished it because I don't have a jon boat, and it's nearly impossible to fish from the bank.

Man I cant get over the mouths and rack of gills those Bass have in that pond. That's a fun light rig to throw on that rod.

Another ShakyHead Bass from today.

Same--skinny gut

Tiny lipless cr/bait Bass

Same pond and weather as yesterday. Caught 8 or 9 dinks too, all on the ShakyHead jig/Zoom Trick Worm.

Tb: I'll be back and answer your question in a few minutes.

Tb: Yes, I've fished(with Randall as a guide) LV twice. Still no lunkers for me there but I will go again as LV is a trophy-Bass lake. Scores of double-digit Bass have been caught(and released) there over the last few years. On my last trip, we came upon a Bass floater. It looked alive but it was dead. She weighed 9 lbs, 12 ounces. Should have taken her pic but we didn't.

Here's my biggest so far from there.

And here are some geese over LV.

Here's Randall's site and some Bass pics from LV.

Tough fishing from the banks as you said. It's a no fuel motors lake. It's 650-800 acres and wind and storms come up quickly so the 'average' jonboat would be dangerous. Randall and most everyone else there uses 3-4 trolling motors.
