Rare late fall bite in Colorado.

Post by dragon1 » Wed Nov 20, 2013 8:59 am

First set of jig and trailer bass...pond is literally the size of a football field. MB XX EMTF, TDZ Type R+ 103H, 30lb Sonic Braid, 14lb Sunline Shooter, 5/16oz Wade's custom black/blue finesse jig on Blue Sapphire Zoom Chunk trailer.

First one about 1.25lbs

This one hit my Cabela's spring scale right at 4lbs...I missed her on a hookset first time and she got off after a very short fight...a quick hook sharpening on the bent hook point, and a quick cast back into the same spot and she ate it again!

Last bass on this body of water...a 12" fish, but clean and healthy

Next few fishies was in the overflow pond at the S. Platte Ponds area...Daiwa Tournament Whisker SS1300, custom Lamiglas XMG50 LP844 extended to 7'3", 15lb Ripcord Si Braid + 12lb CXX moss green leader, 1/2 oz OLD SCHOOL Heddon Sonar in Fire Tiger (using second hole tie).

Ever seen a 4lb + gizzard shad? In Colorado? I can't imagine the fight on these slimy/stinky SOBs on shad darts, 4-6lb test and 8'-10' noodle rods!

Nice 3.5+lb bass to close out the day

Haha...thanks gents. Very warm up to about sunset at just over 70 degrees F. A storm is pushing behind this unusually warm weather, which has always traditionally put on one of the last bites of the year in this area. It will be sub freezing temps and snow by late tonight and tomorrow.

SS 1300 is a rock solid performer with no flash (per today's standards)...like John Cougar Mellemcamp, eh?

Big, strong, slimy, smelly sumbeech too! :P Fought like a faster moving mirror carp, or a deeper diving, heavier thumping big rainbow...if that makes any sense. The entire fight in, I had no idea what was on the line as I have never felt a fight like this one. The bass, I knew immediately as they stayed down deep and bulldogged.

Nice catches! I didn't even think you could catch a gizzard shad with rod and reel. I agree they're the most slimy and stinky fish I've ever been around. I like throwing a casting net sometimes, but don't really enjoy when I net shad.

A 4# gizzard shad OMG Van. And I'm worried about whether or not I can get them to hit a 6 - 8" gizzard shad swimbait. You just gave me a lot more confidence. We'll see how it pans out next spring.

I have caught some up to a couple of pounds, but this thing for being in Colorado is a monstrosity in my book!

Initial on the water time with this rod is VERY GOOD. Need more time next spring in all likelihood in order to form an overall opinion of this rod/blank.
