Latest Custom build is coming together...

Post by IlliniDawg01 » Fri Oct 30, 2015 12:14 am

Building on a Phenix Redeye BR3-C-780H-B 40 Ton Travel Blank (7'8" 3/8 - 1 1/2 FA).

I like how all the custom stuff turned out. I just wish the epoxy would stay where I it was when I left it on the rod dryer. Still turned out pretty good except for some creep on the rear foam grip. I had a fancier reel nut, but it wasn't as comfortable as the basic one and didn't secure the reet foot nearly as well.

I hope to put on the guides this weekend. Black Alconite SS K guides mid-micro sized (BKWAG-7J, BKWAG-6J, BKWAG-5.5J, BKBAG 5 x6, BMNAT-5-5.0 Tip Top) spiral wrapped of course.

Thanks. Normally I'm a function over form guy so I just kinda slop my rods together within reason. I'm actually trying to make this one look a little pretty.

Ever thought about dropping the 7,starting with the 6, and adding another 5?

I tried that, but when I do my spiral wrap I like to keep the striper guide as close to right on top of the blank as possible for aesthetic reasons (mostly OCD) and to help keep line from stacking on one side of the spool. If I used too small a guide (7 is already pretty small, the new Omens use 6s or 6.5s for runner guides for example) then the line can rub the side of the blank as it spirals under in certain conditions if I remember right. That was on a moderate blank, so a 6 would probably have worked fine on this longer, stiffer, faster blank.

I haven't put them on yet, so I still might try it when I static test this weekend.

Well done, Dave! 8-)

What reel are you going to pair it with and what apps are you going to use it for?

I'll put either my IS73 with an RCS1012 spool or my new MetDC on it most likely. It will be used for bigger jigs and texas rigs and perhaps frogs and large spinners on occasion.

Did the blank come with the label on it? I've heard the recon2 comes that way.

Yes and No. The labels were already attached, but to the last 8"of the blank... but they nicely included a second set of labels that were not attached.
