Shimano Scorpion 70HG v Scorpion XT 1000

Post by Fishingboy » Fri Feb 26, 2016 9:20 pm

It's been years since I last posted any images of reels on TT forum. So, here's my take on the new Scorpion 70HG and a side by side comparison with the Scorpion XT1000. This is not a full stripdown comparison. Maybe TT can do that real soon? I just received this reel yesterday and have yet to spool it with line. This is not a performance review.

Image
The 70HG may look slightly larger than the XT1000 in this image but I can tell you that both reels are nearly identical in size, except for the 70HG's larger, slightly wider gearbox to accommodate larger 7.2:1 gears. I like the 85mm handle. 80mm feels a little too short on the XT1000. The aluminum dragstar is a standout upgrade in my opinion.

Image
This may not be the best shot... In terms of palming height, both 70HG and XT1000 are virtually identical.

Image
Just to give you an idea of the size of this reel in relation to my left hand.

Image
Nearly identical in terms of size, except for the 6.3:1 gears in the XT1000's slightly smaller gearbox.

Image
View from the the non-gear side, the palming height is nearly identical.

Image
From the front. The XT1000 is one of my favourite reels and I use it a lot, from perch, bass to peacock bass. I like the profile of the 70HG even more. Call me old school. I like my Daiwa TD-Z and the top plate of the 70HG does remind me of the TD-Z.

Image
Though the 70HG's centrifugal brakes require a slightly larger housing, you can tell by the bulge, the reel sits really flat on the rod.

Image
The 70HG weighs 6.6oz or (187g). Shimano website says 190. So, 187g is pretty close. Just a fraction lighter than the XT1000.

Image
Shimano website says the XT1000 weighs 190g. Mine weighs 6.9oz or 194g and that's with a little bit of fluorocarbon backing as you can see in this image.

Image
Spool diameter is identical but the length is different. 70HG is longer and won't fit the XT1000. Bummer...

Image
In my opinion, the 70HG is very Daiwa by design and I love that in a Shimano reel.

Image
and of course very different to the XT1000 as you can see in this image.

Image
And lastly, it's Made in Malaysia as with the Curado series and Scorpion 200.

Out of the box, it's not as smooth as my Scorpion XT1000. Maybe the bearings aren't properly lubed I don't know. This reel feels really solid and it sure is an incredibly fun reel to fish.

Thanks for the great side by side. Also thanks for answering the question on where it was made. I am liking the fact of the spool dimensions being the the same. I'm now wondering if a spool shaft adapter could be made and the brakes swapped to make the old spools work? Hmm I may have to get one to experiment...

Nice pics and write up. Does the Scorpion 70 have a bearing on the spool?

Thanks for posting this!
Be sure to let us know how they compare in performance.
I love the xt1000 & have been planning on adding another, then I saw the new scorp & decided to wait.

wider side plate is for the XShip not so much the larger gears. My 1000xts have 7.7 gears but it's a great to see pics comparing the 2. I'm going to order 1 or 2 to add to the line up

Not going to happen with the longer shaft for the Xship and SVS

Very cool comparison. It is a good looking reel. It does resemble a Daiwa more so than previous generations once you pull the spool.

I was clueless about the XShip system and never thought that XShip requires such a wide sideplate. Thanks for the info. ;)

Where did you purchase those 7.7 gears (with pinion maybe?) for your XT1000?
