New Build Stuff
Some new stuff to show...
Unfinished raw graphite blank
Fuji ECS seat. Custom painted automotive grade color changing paint. Green to blue.
Custom shaped foam grips with woven carbon skins.
Matagi accessories. Butt, seat rear trim, and seat tip trim.
The color changing paint is tough to capture in a picture. To the eye, its green is much closer to the wraps. And without changing your perspective viewing the seat the color can transition from green to blue if the lighting is just right. I was only able to capture green or blue with a camera.
The grips are a 6 pound foam with an overlay of woven carbon fabric and final finished with urethane.

Re: New Build Stuff
Gorgeous looking rod Matt.
Re: New Build Stuff
Wow, that flip-flop reel seat is sharp!!
Re: New Build Stuff
carbon grips n green if on fire...nice build
Re: New Build Stuff
Damn! this is why I want to go custom for my next rod
Re: New Build Stuff
It looks great. One of the few production rods that I haven't replaced in my regular use line-up is my Daiwa Cielo (old high-end version) that has the purple/green changing color reel seat. This seat reminds me of that, but better.
Re: New Build Stuff
That is a great build. Love those flip flop reel seats.
Re: New Build Stuff
Where can i read up on building with those carbon grips? I tried rileys rods but his how to links were not working for me.
Re: New Build Stuff

Re: New Build Stuff
Thanks guys
There are several articles in the back issues of RodMaker magazine. There is a seminar on YouTube as well by Mike. I've laid up fiberglass before so it wasn't really a big deal for me.falcon wrote:Where can i read up on building with those carbon grips?
Ya. Me either. I had a question that I asked thru the website too and never received a response.falcon wrote:I tried rileys rods but his how to links were not working for me.
Re: New Build Stuff
Thanks Matt. How are the grips as far as getting wet or just slick when fishing? I heard its not a issue but I have a little trouble believing that.

But, personally, I still prefer the feel of cork over any other handle material.

Re: New Build Stuff
Matt, do you hand lay the carbonfiber from a flat sheet or do you use a tubular carbonfiber from a spool? I come from a prosthetics background so I have an idea of the type of work that goes into making those handles. Do you mix a 2 part foam and pour your own core shapes or do you work from prefab foam cores?

Re: New Build Stuff
The carbon fiber is in tube form. Like a Chinese finger trap. I have a few different sizes and fiber thicknesses. As well as colored glass / carbon fiber combination tubes.adam lancia wrote: do you hand lay the carbonfiber from a flat sheet or do you use a tubular carbonfiber from a spool?
I mix and pour my own 2 part foam and make 18" long cylinders. I use a black pigment in the foam so that they come out a dark charcoal grey.adam lancia wrote: Do you mix a 2 part foam and pour your own core shapes or do you work from prefab foam cores?

I know the stuff you mean. Good call on adding pigment into the foam, keeps the beautiful puke yellow from showing through.Mattman wrote:The carbon fiber is in tube form. Like a Chinese finger trap.
