Boone,

It will completley de-spool. Cast out, off, etc. their was no line left. No backlash, nothing but clean spool left.

I had line up to about 1/8 in from the top rim of the spool.

Yes the bearings helped. I am going to order a different set of bearing for it. The bearings I have in it know are borrowed from work and go to one of our machines.

Those two bearings cost more than the reel and ito spool combined.

This was an exsperiment using high dollor, high end parts.

No I don't work for a reel co. I work at a place that uses German high speed, precision cutting tools.

Yes they use some small high speed bearings the same size as the Sol/Alphas spool bearings.

I work in tinker heaven.   And I love it.

Boone,

I am ordering a set of Sic ceramic bearing tomorrow morning. At $33 a set, you can't beat it. They cast like a dream. I have a set on 2 of my Alphas 103F's.

As far as keeping or borrowing the bearings long term. No way. I have the resources and personnel to tinker on almost any project I wish. I would not jeopardize my job or my commitment to God for any reason.

DR,
I don't think boone meant stealing them, just saying to let your boss know that you will return them when you are done.................4-5 years from now. ;)

They are not bad to put in at all. The one on the outer cover is easy. Just a small screwdriver and pop out the bearing clip. The one on the spool is a little harder. You need eather a tool made to remove the spool pin or modify a pair of plyers.

Once you do it, its like riding a bike it is easy and fun.
