Peacock Bass in Hawaii
Peacock Bass in Hawaii
After much trying without success due to my refusal to use live bait, I finally caught a decent sized tucunare (peacock bass) today at Lake Wilson. It was my first time using my new curado 100D and 6'6" ML compre rod. I caught it on a weightless 4" white BPS stick-o and 8lb. Trilene XL. I think it was about 2.5 lbs. I wanna go back tomorrow and get a 5 pounder!

Re: Peacock Bass in Hawaii
Just to add some pictures to this thread. I'm an avid PB fisheman myself. I caught and released this 4lb PB in a artificial lake in Malaysia last week. Never before i've fished for largemouths in tropical M'sia. but according to a friend who used to fish for largemouths, PB's are better fighthers than largemouth. By the way, what variation PB's are there in Hawaii?

Very cool!
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.

Now that's a great looking fish! How was the fight and what type of line were ya using?

Re: Peacock Bass in Hawaii
My tackle setup as shown in the picture is as follow,
Reel - Shimano Calcutta 50XT
Rod - St Croix Premier fast action 6' 4-10lb (PC60MLF2)
Line - Fins PRT braid 10lb with 14lb Silverthread leader
Lure - Tackle House Necton minnow 85mm (Chartruse)
Very good fight indeed in deep water althought the water level is 6 feet below normal. So far, the largest caught at that area tipped the scale at 6lbs!

Re: Peacock Bass in Hawaii
Hey, Nice fish! To answer your question, I believe the type of peacock here in Hawaii(island of Oahu) is the Butterfly Pavon. On the island of Kauai, I think there are 2 types, but I could be wrong. Yes, you are right about the fighting ability of the peacock vs. the largemouth. Largemouth are relatively weak fighters. That's why bass reels are so low in line capacity. They are still my favorite fish though. Peacock>smallmouth>largemouth.
The fish in my picture didn't fight well because I think it was post-spawn, so it was still weak from not eating much.

Re: Peacock Bass in Hawaii
Skunked bro,
Thanks for the compliment. Likewise, the PB's in Malaysia are of Butterfly Pavon. Thanks for the confirmation about the fighting abilities of PB's vs. largemouths. You are absolutely right about the low line capacity (shallow spools) of most bass fishing baitcasting reels. to compensate for that, i opt for low poundage low diameter lines (i.e. fusions and braids). I found that the PB's at the place i fished are quite line shy, probably due to the low water lavel. that's why i opt for a florocarbon leader. if you have any pictures of PB's, please share them on this thread. i'll do the same as well
