Help me ID this fish.
Help me ID this fish.
Perhaps it's just me, but I have trouble identifying this fish I caught over the weekend...
I have an idea of what it might be, but I'd like know what you all think...

Re: Help me ID this fish.
Thanks everyone for all the input.
So I did some research on sunfish browsing Wikipedia and it appears that certain species, like the redear sunfish, can hybridize with other sunfish. So I guess the rip-rap I was fishing was a natural "hybrid-zone" where different species of sunfish nest in close proximity. The one I caught looks like redear sunfish + bluegill. What do you all think? Has anyone else encountered hybrid sunfish like this one?
BTW, Wikipeda has excellent information on sunfishes:
Centrarchidae
Lepominae

Re: Help me ID this fish.
I am almost positive that isnt a hybrid, but without seeing it in person it is hard to tell. Almost all of the sunfish family can interbreed and produce viable hybrids. It would take some DNA testing to prove the the true identity. If you are looking for a good field guide check out the peterson field guide on freshwater fishes. Much more scientifically sound than wikipedia.

Wow! The second picture of the redear/shell cracker is almost identical.
