solvent question

Post by Oolie » Mon Aug 20, 2007 7:31 pm

i need a solvent that won't distort plastic, like the plastic that the white idle gears on a shimano curado or calcutta are made of.

should you find such a solvent, you can rest easy knowing it wont distort the brown plastic idle gear found in the td-luna, millionaire, etc. ;)

CRC Contact cleaner which are plastic safe. Don't use the Electronic Cleaner as this is some nasty stuff.

I use the contact cleaner on all plastic parts. It doesn't even harm rubber seals and "o" rings. BTW, those plastic gears are inexpensive so why not stock on them just in case. Usually, the teeth are the first to go. You'll rarely break the gear in half or multiple pieces. As long as there are some teeth left, the reel will still function. Those gears are meant to fail so as to not damage the reel. Imagine if your fingers were stuck between the frame and the guide on a non-disengaging level wind reel like the 300/400/700TE. I bet there would be some damage to your finger if those plastic gears didn't fail. I've had broken teeth on my 300/400TE brake case, and the idle gears on of my 250DC. Cheap and simple to replace.

I have been using Reel Scrubber for a while.

It doesn't remove dirt and grease as quick as acetone on industrial alcohol but it it pretty plastic & paint friendly.

Acetone has worked for me, as has alcohol, and contact cleaner (meumpactumdictum is right about making sure to get the right kind though).

Right now, since I have so much of it, I usually use MPro 7 / Hoppe's Elite gun cleaner. It is safe on all surfaces, except for certain types of luminescent paints, and it is non-toxic and non-aromatic (unlike many arene-based solvents), which is nice when you are in a room with poor ventilation. It is pricey, though, for the typical consumer.

Plain old Ronsonol lighter fluid (naphtha). Works great, won't harm plastics, and it's CHEAP!! :P

The Alochol will dry residue free.

I'd test anything stronger.
