spinning reel anti-reverse bearings lube?

Post by mark poulson » Wed Oct 19, 2011 6:28 am

I have several older Quantum spinning reels.
They sat for a long time.
Now the anti-reverse bearing doesn't engage, and I have to back reel all the time.
Do I need to lube those bearings, and, if so, with what?

Clean, flush and then add a few drops of your favorite oil... do not grease.

Actually it depends on the lubricants used. Some oils are too slick to be used in this bearing. I find a dab of Hot Sauce or Super Lube grease to work just fine in A-R bearings.

I see I've been using too much oil and grease.
I thought, since they look like wheel bearings, they should be packed with grease. DOH!!!!

It looked like my Sol's came with a light grease in the anti-reverse bearing. So, I asked a guy at the Daiwa service dept. and he said oil is fine. Sometimes the anti-reverse lever may not engage properly. Old and sticky lube at the lever can also cause problems with spinning reels.

I'll soak the bearings in acetone today and clean them. Then just a drop of light oil, and see if that helps.

I only use reelx for this and it doesn't run off like lighter oil

I tried two drops of Hot Sauce, Quantum's oil, and the bearings slip.
I'm frustrated. I'm used to bearings jamming and siezing up, not being too loose.

try wiping most of the oil out of the rollers with a q tip, all you need is a thin coat. i usually just add 1 drop of oil to a q tip and swab the rollers with it. too much oil will cause the rollers to slip.

This post is quite old, but Why these guys are telling you to use oil on an a/r bearing is absolutely incorrect. Use a light film of grease and your problem will be fixed unless your bearing is already shot.

Thanks. The oil didn't work, so I'll try the grease next.
Can I use the red Quantum grease that comes in the tube?

Hot Sauce grease will work fine. I have experienced severe slippage with Reel Saver grease though as it's basically a concentrated version of their oil and extremely slick.
