For casting improvement, does the BB retained on the spool need to be upgraded? I'm rather hesitant in removing the pin. If not, I'm assuming the bearing near the CC cap takes the casting load. Thankyou.

the spool shaft bearing DOES need replacing to get the full effect of a bearing upgrade. the outer bearing only seems to make intermittent contact with the spool shaft as it spins...

nah, it's not that bad as long as you are careful and have the right tool

or, you could get the avail spool that doesn't use the spool shaft bearing at all....

The tool I use to remove spool pins which works great by the way is:

A simple tutorial can be found here: http://www.japantackle.com/Tuning_parts ... earing.htm
It’s very simple and I like the fact that the tool works slowly so if you pay attention to what you are doing you won’t accidentally damage anything. :big grin:

I can't say if it works on the 50S but I know it works on Daiwa and Abu reels just fine. The Hedgehog tool is awesome. There is also the Boca spool pin pliers.

Yeah I don’t know about the CQ 50s, but it’s great on my CQ51.

You are correct, I just verified, the pin is too deep on the 50s/51s spools.

this is interesting. Why do you need the avail spool for an already great stock 50s spool? care to share if there is any noticeable difference between the two?
HEAPS! The avail spools are much lighter, stock is 13.6, avail 9.5-9.8
And for finesse applications I prefer these screw brake, although it takes a while to change withe cw unlike the core.

Alternatively you could put on a cq50 brake case and use avail cq50 spool ( 7.7g 45m of 8lb)

for the Conquests i know a way to modify the drag stack to increase max drag but i save that for my 100's as i think for the 50S and UL in general the priority is smoothness over max...
I'm interested in increasing the max drag of my calcutta 100te gt reel. Can you tell me what to do to achieve this as my gem of a 100te gt reel is my favorite by far.
