SS gears work in a Steez, but not a TDZ. Steez gears won't work in a TDZ, either. But TDZ gears WILL work in a Steez. Has to do with the idler gear below the main gear and how it relates to the main gear. The Steez main gear slides on a friction washer immediately below it, while a TDZ gear has 6 holes which are milled into the back of the main gear-which, in turn, line up with 3 protrusions on said idler gear in the TDZ, with the friction washer below that small gear(idler turns the worm gear for the levelwind). On the TDZ, this effectively locks the levelwind into doing what the main gear does. i.e., if the drag slips and the main gear ceases to move forward, the levelwind stops advancing also. Whereas, the Steez's levelwind could continue to advance if you turn the handle while drag is being taken out. Of course, minor machining of the Steez or the SS's main gear could make the gear set work in a TDZ. The only necessary mod to make a TDZ gear set work in a Steez is to open up the pinion yoke on the Steez just a bit. Off-topic just a little, but it does offer a possibility for a lighter 6.3:1 or 7:1 duralumin gear set in a TDZ from the SS, provided you can have the milling done to match the stock TDZ brass main gears.
The 6.3 brass TDZ kit that the TackleTrap used to sell worked for this. Included a gear to drive the wormgear that didn't lock into the main gear and a spacer. If you could find where they were sourcing those two parts from you should be able to fit the SS SV gears into a TDZ. Assuming of course that you were fitting them into a 6.3 Steez and not a 7.1??

After re-reading that, they were probably just getting the worm drive gear and spacer from a Steez.
