new gears for a rough reel

Post by johnD » Mon May 25, 2020 9:19 am

Typically what else do you swap out besides the main gear and pinion after a reel gets geary feeling ? Yoke , ar bearing and sleeve , etc ? I'm gonna order some parts but , don't wanna leave anything that's necessary out. Thanks

I only service my own reels, so this is not an informed opinion, but I only change out the main gear and the pinion. If it still feels geary after that, I look at the bearings.

Disengage the spool and spin it to be sure the spool bearings aren't part of your problem. If those are good, replace the pinion bearing(upper and lower pinion bearings on most Daiwas). Even the main shaft bearing and worm gear bearing can also make the reel feel geary. I've replaced gears before, only to find out that one of the frame bearings was the culprit.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

And then sometimes it's the AR doing some of the noise...

With the yolk just check it - in a good well designed reel they won't chew out.

Thanks for the info fellas. I'll make sure and check all of the bearings.
