Scorpion drag star play

Post by rando » Tue Jun 09, 2020 4:55 pm

My scorpion mgl developed a bit of play in the drag star. How do I fix it?

If theres play in the star, as in it rocks back and forth, but doesn't move the drag settings, it's likely that the star has wallowed out where the square nut fits into it underneath. If so, replacement is the only option. If you mean that it can be pushed in towards the reel body, then pops back out, that's because it just floats on a spring. If that's it, theres nothing you can do about it, except MAYBE replace the spring.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

This sounds right which is unfortunate as this reel has been barely used... I know it does not have to stop me from using it, but it sure is annoying.
Thanks for help!

Ok took the star off and the rectangular opening is very loose. Does not look like it ever was tight, more like I did not notice. New part on the way.
Thanks again.

Ok, so installed brand new curado 200k drag star, still a little play. Ordered a brand new part for sorpion mgl drag star from overseas (altough I know it should be the same as curado), still a little play. Left it alone for couple of weeks and then last weekend got to play with friends 2019 antares.. touched a drag star on shimano flagship and I get exact same amount of play 😳😳😳. After opening the scorpion back up I have come to believe that it is the drag star clicker system causing the play in the drag star and that it is normal for some reason..
Can shimano owners please check if this is normal???
Every other reel I own (without naming brands) has a tight, no play, drag star. Am I being ocd or is it ridiculous?

Very normal.

If it's the migrating sinch nut and the spring stop that is seated under the hollowed out drag star as pictured - its as per design.

It's not like the older reels that had the drag star that wound up and down the handle shaft.

OCD and design expectations are different.

The design of the drag star is that way for a reason as the sinch nut travels up and down inside of it and the spring compresses inside too. Otherwise if it were like other brands that had a wind up / down drag star you'd end up with a nasty gap between the top of it and the bottom side of the handle for example the Chronarch / Calcutta design et al.

Understandable. Does not change the fact that it annoys the hell out of me. It is the only reel I own that has this kind of play.
It bothers me and just because it is part of the design it won't stop bothering me.
