I identify as a bolt, but realise I'm a shaft.

Post by Slazmo » Sat Jun 27, 2020 12:20 am

Bought a crusty old Chronarch D7 for bugger all. Good guts and frame / side plates etc.

Cleaned up well but realised that the access side panel (to the spool) it's shaft that it swings away on was corroded due to dissimilar reaction between it being aluminium and a stainless steel pin that acts on a cam on the body.

Rang Shimano, part has been obsolete for quiet a few years...

Well got to work thinking of how to replicate it - tried a few guys with metal lathes - to no avail and work starting at $100 an hour minimum plus materials as they wouldn't use a bolt as stock.

So I went another way.

The donor material started life as a M4 Allen key bolt in Stainless Steel a $0.40 piece, took that to a friend welder who zapped the head and filled with stainless.

Spent a good number of hours thinking about the process over the week before starting it all - just readying myself really.

Got to work today and here's the results.

Now just to do a little stainless polishing to bring upto mirror and rebuild the reel.

If a part isn't available and it's a simple part like that, give it a crack and replicate it...

Did 95% of the work with a mini hand file, a Dremel carbide tip to drill the 2 holes and the mini cut off wheel for the E clip recess.

And I'm not trade qualified by any means... It may show with the outcome to some.

Don't forget perseverance. I'd have quit after the first hour of filing with a tiny little file like that.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Files don't cut too well into plastic. That's an injection machines job ;)

But it won't be long till people get jack about parts dwindling / prematurely pulled out of supply, till you'll start seeing home tinker's making these necessary part's for the masses.

Outstanding!
Shimano: "Sorry, sir. That part has been discontinued."
