Aldebaran mg7

Post by chrisg_sdcf » Sat Jul 04, 2020 9:13 pm

Well, what I thought was a excellent condition aldebaran 51 mg7 showed up today with some bubbling and possibly corrosion under the frame where people sometimes put their hooks (looks like that's what damaged the paint).

Anyway to make it worse I decided to clean it but ended up with an extra washer. Small silver washer similar to the one on the line guide cap. I've looked for it in the schematics but can't find it. On the schematic there is a part 92 and 93 that look like it could be a washer but I don't see it on the core schematic.

Any idea where the washer goes?

Is there room for a second in the line guide cap. Had many reels that took 2. But re-reading that "similar"... Has someone managed to pop one under the handle shaft as like in Daiwa reels to stop that handle shaft play?

To clean up that magnesium corrosion you got to pick at it, use a nylon brush some mild acid and scrub and neutralise - force dry it with a hair drier and quickly seal it with epoxy. Easiest way to neutralise it. But magnesium corrosion is a hard topic...

I just assumed it only had one in the cap but didn't pay that much attention when removing it. I didn't take the drive shaft off this time so it's not from under the shaft but I think I've read of people doing.something like that for the handle play.

I'll take a picture of the corrosion but of I can just take care of it as you described it won't be too bad since it's out of sight.

Thanks

You'll know the difference in size from the line guide shim vs the handle knob shim washer.

That corrosion will need a full strip so you can get to the frame. Realistically if you could get it as clean and back to metal as possible then you can prime and encapsulate the MG and try to stop corrosion as best as you can.

You'd want to get it like this on my Curado K
