Help diagnosing SV 103 issues
Help diagnosing SV 103 issues
I have a 7.9 SV 103 that during a tournament yesterday started feeling like there was binding and resistance while working a frog. When looking at the worm gear, it didn't appear to be anything there. I don't mind cleaning reels, but I guess have been fortunate that I haven't experienced really any major problems or defective reels/parts.
Any ideas before I tear down?
Also, I feel like all 3 of my SV103's are over-braked. I have magnets set to 3 or less and mechanical brake set to right at no side to side play. Is this common? Is there a fix for it?

Are these the stock spools? If so, they are notorious for being over braked. You could change out the spring/inductor or try another 34mm spool.

Yes they are stock spools. It sucks when skipping and pitching.

Re: Help diagnosing SV 103 issues
I have 9 SV103s and have experienced the exact thing to you are talking about on my frog reel.
I think it was the shaft bearings. I ended up soaking the and cleaning the anti-reverse and shaft bearing. Took care of my issue.
I've had mine for so long I'm considering ordering all new frame bearings and doing complete rebuilds. I have spare gear sets for all of them as well.
I plan to run the SV103s into the ground until they disintegrate in my hand.

Thanks. What brand type of bearings did you purchase for new frame bearings?RMCatchNrelease wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 5:04 amI have 9 SV103s and have experienced the exact thing to you are talking about on my frog reel.

Re: Help diagnosing SV 103 issues
Make sure that your spool and all other bearings are lubed. I use Alchemy Oil Medium Light on all of my SV103 spool bearings and I get good distance with control. They are great for skipping. If you aren't cleaning and lubing your reels regularly, they will feel over-braked and not feel smooth. All of my SV103 reels are butter. Don't forget to lube your pinion and driveshaft bearings. The pinion bearing should be replaced regularly if you are using it for heavy duty purposes and you aren't good about keeping it lubed.

FWIW...the 2019 Morethan PE spool in the SV103 absolutely rips with braid.
