Source for Pinion/Drive Bearings

Post by reason162 » Wed Oct 18, 2023 10:07 am

These will be packed with grease as per TT members' suggestion - not sure if I need/want hybrids or simply stainless steel and where to source them?

Also, can anyone confirm the sizes of the following bearings -

21 Zillion - 2x Pinion, Drive gear

Alphas SV TW - pinion/drive gear

Catalina TW (previous Zillion HD?) - pinion/drive gear

Late af response but

8x12x3.5 for the bottom pinion bearing and the outside driveshaft support bearing
5x9x3 for the top pinion bearing
5x8x2.5 for the bearing at the base of the drive shaft on the zillion and alphas not sure if it’s the same on the catalina but i wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

Ironically the best place i’ve found to stock up on quality (nmb/nsk) standard sized bearings for reasonable prices is shimano.

nmb 8x12x3.5 part number is 10EX6
nmb 5x9x3 part number is 105BP
nsk 5x8x2.5 part number is 10RKR

If a size is out of stock and you need it just shoot me a message I keep a stock of most standard baitcaster bearing sizes on hand and can possibly help you out if you desperately need one.

I just received a very nice TDZ 103ML from Japan...main and pinion gear looks to be very clean and little use (as does the reel). While cranking with various spools, it feels as if the pinion bearings need replacement. I did grease the bearing under the drive shaft, but haven't checked the pinion gear bearings yet...I plan to do so tomorrow.

Does anyone know the pinion bearing sizes for the TDZ?

bottom/spool side bearing
- 8x12x3.5 (pretty much universal for all bass sized lowpros or at least it’s been that way for every reel i’ve worked on)

top/sideplate side being
- 5x8x2.5

Thank you, much obliged! Also I read another one of your posts that states is most economical and easy to order direct from Shimano?

Driveshaft bearing and both upper and lower pinion bearings checked out good, and I applied bearing grease to all of them. It might be the gears?

I'm gonna replace the upper and lower pinion bearings, but Shimano is out of the 10RKR which is the 5x8x2.5. I ordered enough for three reels, a TDZ 103ML, TDX HSDF, and a spare set.

Also, I think that the top sideplate/side bearing, which is the upper pinion gear bearing, should actually be the 5x9x3?

You can double check and compare to the driveshaft bearing, The TDZ lineup is weird with bearing sizes and finding the complete parts diagram online with parts list is a mess for specific versions. All the ones i’ve cross referenced say 5x8x2.5 is the top pinion bearing size along with the drive shaft bearing.

If you are fishing freshwater, go on EBay and search for your bearing size. As long as they are stainless they will be fine. 10 packs are $20-$40 and they have held up great in saltwater, so should be perfect for fresh. I purchase from TRBRC. Shimano bearings are expensive compared to other sources.
