Switching gears
Switching gears
What would happen if you took a pinion gear out of a 1000 sized reel and put it in a c2000 sized reel would it make a difference or would there be a tapping issue?
Re: Switching gears
You will have issues because the gears develop a wear pattern and should be replaced in sets (drive and pinion).
Re: Switching gears
Ok I understand that part but what I meant is if a pinion gear from a 1000 sized
Reel got waited in the factory while putting together a c2000 size would there be
Any issues? As in the gear being a tad but to small?

Re: Switching gears
Actually some of the 1000-3000 reels would use the same gear sets and just the body and spool sizes are different. I'm not sure about the newer ones though. Which reels are you talking about that has a slightly smaller pinion?
Re: Switching gears
Typically the 1000 size reels use different gears because the tooling is different. Changing the pinion gear alone will not work. The gears are made as a set. You have the depth of the pinion gear and drive gear positioning to deal with. These will vary by gear type. The gear teeth size and pattern will not interchange with others.
Re: Switching gears
Ok I been trying to figure out why there is so much handle lay in my stella c2000hgs
When I go to set the hook I feel a thump I have added shims to the drive gear but
There seems to be movement in the pinion gear to.

Re: Switching gears
I have the drive gear shimmed shimmed so it has a tight connection to the pinion gear but the play I am experiencing is coming from the pinion gear I have added another shim to the pinion gear and that didn't help is there another place I should add shims?
Or should I just replace the gear set and go from there?

Re: Switching gears
Are you sure the play isn't coming from the handle? Or that the rotor isn't loose?
Re: Switching gears
I am sure the rotor is not loose I tighten it as much as it can go for everything to
Fit correctly. When I have the reel apart I can move the pinion gear up ward.
I'm just a little confused on where to add shim washers or if somewhere in the
Production line a gear got mixed up in the process.

Re: Switching gears
The play in the pinion is normal when the reel is apart. The rotor is not there to keep it tight. A little play is acceptable. You can't make a ring and pinion fit too tight or they will wear out quickly. In a car differential .007-.010" is normal. In a spinning reel .003-.005" is acceptable. Shimming the main gear will move the gear closer to the pinion. The gears may just need to be replaced.
