Should I use oil or grease to lube the worm shaft on a casting reel?

I grease the inside lightly do not use too much grease it will just gunk it up just a good coat. I then put a drop or two of oil
on the outside of the wormgear housing so the line guide can slide freely. It works great for me!
gone fishin! borderline 11!

I only use oil. There's not a lot of strain on it most of the time, and, for me, oil collects less dirt than grease. A drop at each end, and a couple along the race.

What Mark says, is the way to go. Grease = Dirt Magnet !

Spinning reels grease and a few dots of oil in the tracks to thin the grease a little.

Baitcasters agreed with oil, it burns off quickly enough however replaced easily and doesnt attract dirt.

Ive heard of people using Rock and Roll bike chain lubes which dry out but leave a waxy Teflon fortified coating that lasts a fair while and attracts near zero dust and dirt.

It depends on if the reel has a nondisengaging level wind design like a Calcutta 400B or TE. These I suggest a light amount of oil. For standard reels like a Curado I suggest grease. For basic maintenance a drop or two of oil is fine. If you are doing a full clean and service the worm needs grease.

A good light coat of marine grease is what I use. Helps to repel the water that may get on it.

I have ever only used ReelX on my worm gears and it seems to work, but everything else works too.

Yes you can use our star drag grease. Just add a couple of drops of our oil to it after you have applied it. You do not need to use a ton of grease. Just a little bit, mixed with some of our oil will be more than sufficient.
