Scorpion 71 vs Curado71

Post by SCBASSIN » Thu Apr 30, 2020 11:56 am

I am trying to decide between these 2 reels. Other than the color I see where the Scorpion has 1 more bearing. I am wondering where it goes & what is it used for. I am going to use it for fishing with baits that weigh from 3/16 to 1/2 oz. which will include frogs up to 1/2 oz. I was thinking a Curado K but read where that reel was having issues.
Thank You for your replies.

I believe the extra bearing is in the handle. I have the scorpion 71HG and use it mainly for pitching. What pound braid are you planning on spooling the reel with? If you're frogging and and spooling up 65 pound braid or heavier, not sure if it will hold enough line if you're bombing casts with it.

Not an ideal reel for frogging, due to what has been mentioned...spool capacity. All the new Shimanos, to me, have problems in one way or another. The gearing in the 70/71 series is better IMO than the K since they dont have the MMG.

The 70 is a little small for frog fishing in my opinion. I am not sure where the extra bearing is on the Scorpion. To my knowledge they are the same outside of some small appearance changes. I suppose they could be using a bearing on the worm shaft, but I do not have a schematic for the Scorpion handy. We only deal with North American products for the most part.

Specs say Scorpion is 7+1 and Curado is 5+1. There are 4 bushings in the handle knobs on the Curado and one bushing for the Levelwind. The Scorpion comes with 2 bearings and 2 bushings per knob, and part numbers on the schematic shows this. Also has a Levelwind bushing. These bushings/bearings are all the same size.

If you want a reel that you can also frog with, go with either the Curado K, Scorpion MGL, or Bantam MGL due to line capacity.

Thank Y'all for the replies. I was most interested in the Scorpion vs Curado. I mention the Curado K because I was thinking about the smaller frogs that are 1/4oz (pond frogs). I have a bunch of smaller 5" worms that I have discovered that were stored away.these are from the mid 70's. Fished them on 12 lb stren line with a split shot about 8" up the line on a Shimano Magnumlite Graphite Med/light action rod ML 1551. The reel was a Bantam Magnumlite Plus (2001) , gear ratio is 5.1:1. I still have 5 of the reels & 2 of the rods. I am wanting a higher ratio gear ratio reel & can get a brand new Curado 71 XG at a hell of deal from a shipmate that I was with on my 1st. Submarine back in the 50's so that is what I have decided to do. Thanks Again!

I must be brain dead because I see comments on Curado K like "problems with the K", "The K makes a grinding noise" , or "My K has a geary feel". I have three K XG's and could not ask for a smoother reel with no problems at all. I do keep Shimano ACT2 drag grease on the main gear teeth. Strange. All three of mine get a steady workout.

I dug out the schematic for the Scorp 70/71. Here's where I see the bearing placements:

1 - Base of Drive Shaft
2 - Spool side of the Pinion
3 - Spool
4 & 5 - One each per handle knob
6 & 7 - The schematic is showing two bearings between the cast control cap and the pinion gear
