Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
I spoke with the engineer and he says that if you cannot hear the DC unit working then there is no way the brakes are applying. This means there is a problem with the DC unit.
Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
i tried some casting 2 days ago and i can hear the dc sound but it is very very weak.so the dc module is not wasted but since the sound generates from magnetic breaks stii might be a problem of the dc module internally?
ill give the reel to the service but they're not really experienced with these kind of reels.
Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
Haha, sending any reel to Daiwa/Shimano AU service department is a gamble haha.
Half the time it comes back worse.

If you can hear it then it is working. Try some different settings and see what it does. When I test a DC I check every setting to make sure it is all working. The newer units are virtually sealed and there is no way to clean or check anything else besides function.

Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
So there's no contact points to program them as a completed unit, or they programed and then assembled and then tested?
Because there are a lot of contacts that could be used to do so.
Does the newer high end DC modules still use the optical sensor for the spool?

They are programmed, assembled then tested. Actually they are tested twice. Once at the plant where the DC units are made and again prior to assembly. That isn't an optical sensor to my knowledge.

Pic from 2010 Conquest DC manual
Also comes with a warning not to get any oil around the sensor.
I'm not sure the new DC units use the same setup though for measuring spool RPMs

Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
The warnings on the newer gen DCs are mostly around not putting any force on the coil.
Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
maan that's kinda like a mini mri machine inside the reel lol
Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
I'm not educated in the electrical side of things, but i guess it's just like a reverse electric motor.
Instead of an electrical current used to power shaft rotation in a motor,
the reel spool shaft (and the magnet) rotates within coils generating a current in the coils.
I assume the current in the coils is then used to charge a capacitor to power a chip/microcontroller and to increase/decrease the current or the timing of the current going through the coils on the next cast to suit a braking profile.
I could be talking complete sheeet because I only know how to engineer things out of dirt

Re: Exsence dc 17 dc sound gone
I dare say visually observe the DC unit out of the reel, look for any contamination, wipe clean the coils both inside and out with a white piece of cotton cloth / cotton tip or similar.
If that optic sensor exists (you'll have a cut out in the spool above the magnet cylinder) wipe inside of it too carefully. While your at it wipe the spool magnet down too.
I would sit with it on the couch and wind it slowly and fast for an amount of time and try to 'charge' it, spin the handle fast / uncontrolled to see if the DC unit whines (may have to max brake it).
My DC reels have sat for a long time while in the cabinet, I regularly just give them a spin up. But foe a DC unit to fail unexpectedly is quiet wild especially in a flagship reel... My DC calais spent an unknown amount of time under water and the DC unit all these years later performs better than new offerings.

im waiting what the service might find out , not big hopes .maybe afterwards i might try to open dc module..Slazmo wrote: ↑Tue Aug 25, 2020 1:33 pmI dare say visually observe the DC unit out of the reel, look for any contamination, wipe clean the coils both inside and out with a white piece of cotton cloth / cotton tip or similar.

You can open them, I mean you could check point to point and fault find and replace a $0.00001c part that may make it work again.
Bit like Crapple products. But they do it on purpose.
