I think they are made to be put on the foot of the reel to protect the reel seat or to get a better fit.

That is correct. They are to adjust for loose fitting reels in some reel seats, or if the rod has a metal reel seat (not too common on bass type rods but they exist) to prevent the paint on the foot from getting damaged. In all my years here I have never seen anyone send in a reel that used them.

I use them on all of my Stella FJ’s (the only reels I use) but have never had a need to send any of them in. :lol:
