Swimb8 reel

Post by mhood » Sun Jul 22, 2007 7:36 pm

Would a DC250 make a good one, or should I think in terms of a Conquest 300 or something? I do like round reels. I suppose I could start calling my ABU 6500/Airrus Centurian catfish rig a swimb8 rig and be done with it...

I do just fine with a Met XT for swimbaits from 1.5~3oz.
The 250DC should be perfect for anything 1~6oz.
It really all depends on that kind of line you are going to be using.

A 200-250 size should be fine for small and medium SB.
TD-Z BB is another choice, this is what I have been using.

For Lake Leon? Definitely Penn 320 or Abu 70003C. (At about 12 oz each, they should balance out the bait. Will be effortless casting.).

Your Abu 6500. I had the spool bearings, dual bearing wormshaft kit, and ball bearing Idler kit upgraded on one of my C3's. The reel can throw baits out a LONG way. In any event a viable option IMO.

The 250DC would make an excellent swimbait reel IMO. I was thinking of buying the Daiwa Steez 100H for my swimbait use due to its weight.

That might be a bit fragile for banging heavy SB... what size baits are you planing to use with the steeze..

Probably no more than 2 oz. I would consider my 100DC but then I would have to use braid and I don't know if I want to do that.

I have the steeze and I don't think I would throw 2.0z baits on it.. I just think the wear and tear on these ultra light componets is going to beat that reel up..

I do throw 2.0 and below on a TDZ-ITO which had some boat rash... the Drag, Spool, Handle and Bearings have been upgraded and I have been using 15lb gamma with no issues.. I also have the Big Bait Speacial, Zillion and Ringa.. I have the SMAK as well but have not used it yet..

There is not a swimbait reel on this planet that can compete with the Calcutta 400TE.. That is the standard for swimbait reels as of now. My opinion of course.

I have a SMAK (I was strangely attracted to the color). When you get around to using it, let us know what you think. ;)

Color?

I'm going to load it up with 25lb Gama and try it for some of the bigger swimbaits like the Huddleston, Raptor Tool, 1-up etc...

Especially(the 300) for the heavier S/Bs and then a Calais(Antares AR or 200) for the lesser weight S/Bs for me.

i have been throwing Matt's and huddleston's on a TDZ 103p for some time and have not had a problem. I like it for the low gear ratio
