How slow do you fish swimbaits in cold weather?

Went fishing yesterday, very cold. Bass were slamming trout from below, but I wasn't able to get them to hit my wake bait. How slow should I be fishing it? Long pauses?

No trout or deep clear water here, just fairly shallow tanic water. But last year I caught my biggest fish of the year the week before Christmas on a MS 7" 2x slammer cranking it thru any left over matts I could find. The lake had been iced over a couple times already so the water was cold. It was more of a reaction type bite as I had to crank it fairly fast to get it down about a foot and with braid on the reel I could rip it thru the weeds. It was 6lbs 12oz.
