can i throw a pole dancer?

Post by mcha16 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 5:27 pm

I have a 7/8 gloomis reel and a 9wt rod coming in,
and the line is 7wt, i was wondering if i can throw a size 2 fly on it.
its a pole dancer used for stripers.

Why are you getting a 7wt line for a 9wt rod? If you got one of the 'integrated shooting head lines' (Rio Outbound Short or Airflo Sniper for example) they are designed to be heavier than the AFTMA weights on purpose. Those lines aren't made for a lot of false casting. Pretty much one back cast & let it fly. In other words, with a 9wt rod, I'd get a 9wt Outbound Short.

Here is a great video for casting sinking lines by Lefty Kreh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_nYg_lMq7U
Great technique for casting the lines mentioned above. Also seen it called Belgian Cast

Most any 8wt or 9wt rod, properly lined, should be able to throw that Poledancer easily.
