Favorite fly rod and why??
Re: Favorite fly rod and why??
My bamboo 5wt because I made it myself. It was supposed to be a 4wt Payne 400 taper but ended up throwing a 5wt line better, living and breathing grass!

Without a doubt it's my Barclay 733. He was clearing inventory for his new line and sold the blanks. I built the rod myself. It's a very minimalistic build with high-end components. Snake brand Eco guides, Lemke reel seat with cocobolo insert, clear thread wraps, and flor grade cork. Everything feels like sh*t after using flor grade cork. It's also the perfect dry fly rod for the Driftless.

If you’re looking for just the rod for under $200 you can’t go wrong with an Echo Carbon XL/Ion XL. Amazing warranty, tough rod and casts better than a few $800 rods I’ve seen. I have the 10ft 8wt as my backup Steelhead rod and it packs a lot of punch for a lower end rod but still has a lot of feel on the cast.

My favorites are some oldies...
Single handed would be a tie between my Winston LT5 4wt 8'9" and my SweetGrass Bamboo 8ft 4wt hollowbuilt.
Spey rod I'll have to pick the Sage One 8136-6, my goto Steelhead rod.
No doubt the newer rods are higher performance, lighter and cast further, but they make me work harder than I want to on the waters...

What size fish can you catch on a 5-weight fly rod?

I am a long time angler, but new to fly casting. I got an Echo Prime 8wt this summer and I love it. I may not know what I am missing with higher end domestic builders, or out grow it when I get better, but for now it feels just right.

Sage R8 690-4 with a Ross Animas, super light and powerful.
Ross Animas is probably my favorite reel but I do also love my Abel Vaya

Just got the Gloomis NRX+ 788 SF (swim fly)
Using it with a Ross Animas 7/8, can't wait to try it out in the next few days...
