More then just a pretty face

Post by ecu daniel 14 »

I havent posted in quite awhile, but I have been busy. I recently got a Peak vise and got into messing around with deer hair. As you can tell ive become addicted. These big flies are more then just some pretty orniments for a Christmas tree. Ive cause several bass on them, including this one 5-6ish pound bass, which is also my personal best bass on a fly rod. I have tried tying on saltwater hooks (see electric chicken), but havent had any luck in the salt...yet. Last night I tied a mini popper for bluegill. Hopefully that will work as well as the others.

Very cool! I too have been bitten by the fly tying bug. I usually tie all winter long when the bass fishing is slow to frozen. Mainly Steelhead flies, I have yet to really get into deer hair bugs. Those are some great ties.

Quite a mouth on that fish! It's easy to see how your artistry in bug-making coaxed it open.

Nice work, Daniel. Great flies, fish, and Allen reel! Deer hair bugs are time comsuming but a lot of fun to tie!

Those are absolutely beautiful. Makes me want to get into fly rods again (just dabbled as a teen).
Question- is there any way to tie a frog like that with the hook riding up? Me thinks not, but if you could figure it out that would be money. I guess a weed guard could also be tied in?
*nm I see the weedguard now...

If you spun and cut the deer hair opposite you could tie those hook up, although I'm not sure if the deer hair will have enough give to provide a solid hookup.
