Cork cleaner

Post by Quillback » Thu Dec 27, 2012 5:18 am

Saw the topic on cork sealant, which leads me to ask what is a good cork cleaning product? Where can I buy it (searched a couple of tackle sites and can't find it listed). Maybe you can use a household cleaner? Any advice appreciated! I've got lots of dirty cork handles :)

The best i've used is Magic Eraser! You can find it at any big box retailer like Target or Wal-Mart.

Seconded! Using U-40 on the cork will keep your cork handles looking new. Cork is porous and U-40 soaks into the cork sealing the cork from grime & oils, toughens the cork, reducing chipping and enhances the the cork feel. It will also as mentioned cause the cork to take on a shade darker in color. All good if you ask me, a no brainer.

I've used toothpaste on a cloth, no water and it works great. Rub it on and wipe it off. I have also used baby wipes in a pinch and it has aloe in it which keeps the cork from drying out. No issues with either as far as making the cork slippery of taking off layers of cork.

Magic Eraser has worked good on cork for a few years now. Simple green/water 50/50 mix for getting grime off reel seat, guides, and blank.

Germ X Gel and a rag. Removes all the dirt and grim and leaves the cork soft and smooth. Looks brand new.

Dawn dish soap, warm water, and a soft brush works well -

I use dish soap, water and a tooth brush to clean cork. If it gets really dirty then I would one of those green scrubbing pads instead of a brush. For those people who make their own rods and have access to power wrapper, you could re-sand the cork and make it look new again, but at a slightly smaller diameter :D
