Hi all,
every now and then I am going to some very remote areas to fish where there is no cell phone signal. Since my wife freaks out at this and I would also feel more comfortable to call somebody in case I broke a leg I am looking into buying a pair of walkie talkies.
I am a little bit overwhelmed/confused by the reviews that I am seeing on the web.
So, was wondering if anybody has experience/ recommendations.
What would be important to me is:
* Good range: 36 - XX miles
* Great battery life
* Weather sealed: needs to be able to handle some water splashes/ dust
* Weight: not more than 1 pound per 'phone'
* Cost: under 150 USD
Thanks for your feedback!

I think you'd be better off getting a CB radio like the inshore/offshore guys use. Greater range and you can likely tune directly into an emergency channel that's monitored by emergency response agencies.

A lot of the newer PLBs have a message function where you can directly message friends, family, or the authorities. World wide coverage so no limit on signal.

36 mile plus range? If I'm reading your post correctly theres no walkie you're going to get that range out of. I have 45 watt motorola UHF mobile radios in my trucks and I don't get that kind of range in a rural setting. To do it "legal" you'd need an fcc license for a business band walkie for anything beyone the motorola talkabouts
