Cost to ship a rod is lunacy

I don't know if this was the proper area to post:

I'm getting to like some of the USDM Evergreen rods. The 7'1" spinning is perfect for me now in South Carolina. It would have been CRAZY good where I used to fish in New Jersey. The 7'3" heavy casting is nice. The 7'4" spinning rod on the other hand is just OK for my purposes. I've used it a couple of times, it's just not as necessary as I thought it would be.
Now, to the point, okay, now I'd like to sell it, rather than have it clutter the garage. Do you know what it cost to ship a 7'4" rod?
How is a merchant able to ship a 7'4" rod for $10 overnight but it's gonna cost me $100 for whenever it gets there? What are the options to ship a rod for a realistic price?

(I don't remember the exact amount, but it was in that range)

7'1" rod
San Jose, CA to Palatka, FL
$40.00 - USPS Priority Mail (3-day delivery)
$44.75 - UPS Ground (7-day delivery)
both prices includes $525 insurance
This pricing is as of yesterday (4 March)

I was on the USPS site not 2 hours ago and they wanted the $104 price. 88". I couldn't believe it because I sold a couple of flipping sticks, many years ago, 40 bucks tops, insured, priority.
I'll check your ###s again to see if I'm missing something.

I'm pretty sure they ding you pretty hard after 84 inches. Make sure your width, height and girth aren't over actual sizes. I think I used 4, 4, and 8 last rod. Don't use pvc that is larger than need be. Same with weight. I've always plugged in 5 lbs, and it was fine. Put in 84 inches, and see if the price changes.

The two 7'1" rod shipments each used a tube that was 87" x 5" x 5" x 11" (length/width/height/girth) with a total weight of 5 lbs.

Put those values in the "Click and Ship" and see what you get. If it is reasonable, as it should be, then adjust any dimensions/weights as needed.

Put those values in the "Click and Ship" and see what you get. If it is reasonable, as it should be, then adjust any dimensions/weights as needed.

When you mentioned the 87" length, I thought, ahh, 87" vs 88", maybe that has something to do with it. Nope. Found out, the dimensions I was entering:

90"x5"x5" = $103.00
90"x4"x4" = $14.00

Height and width also affected price. Well ain't that something.

Shipping 2 spinning rods should only yield a 3x3x90" dimension set. 3" pvc pipe should be all you need for spinning rods. Anything larger is overkill.

Down here, the magic number for tube length is 89". Anything over that is big money to ship.

Just a word to the wise, be careful under spec'ing shipping containers/tubes. Sometimes they check, sometimes they don't, but if you short the measurements for a lower price and they catch it, you will get the bill . Which could hurt based on some of the pricing seen above... .

Speaking from experience...not a rod thank goodness, but I shipped a box and was 1 lb light on my guess so had to pay extra about a week later.

I did get a rod from a guy a while back who just used a USPS Pri Mail Med Flat Rate Box label... so $13. AND it got here in one day! Not sure how he got away with it though.

I had to ship a broken rod for warranty in, costed alot so I asked the compay if i can just send the handle in and they said ok, saved me alot of money.

You are better of taking the rod directly to the PO and have them price it there. It varies from PO to PO believe it or not.

Looking at my selling spreadsheet-- I was paying $14- $16 early last year to ship USPS Priority mail with insurance. It sure has been creeping higher since then......
