Need input spook rod
Need input spook rod
Hey guys, I have had dedicated rods just to fish "super spooks". A few years back I found a rod that fit the bill perfect, I found it by accident and it was super cheap. And now it is no longer available, and the 2 that I have are about ready for retirement. They have been true workhorses and it is showing. I know a lot of you have had access to a lot of rods, so I'm asking for some input. Specs: 6'6" mh f now the rod I have has some type of fiberglass in the make up, not like s-glass or glass. So it was more like fast to mod fast. I need something that won't break the bank, but durable. these rods will see a lot of use and I don't want to worry about messing up a 300-500 dollar rod. Thanks for any input.

Dobyns champion 734c. This rod was actually designed for super spooks. It is a very versatile rod, you can do just about everything with it

Dobyns 685cb.
Re: Need input spook rod
Dobyns 685cb is good for spook, but not sure it is quite enough rod for super spook
Re: Need input spook rod
That one looks like it could be along the lines of what I'm looking for, thanks spooky

I really like a 6'10" mh Tatula Rod with 30lb Power pro for spook'n and toss'n sammies. They stay hooked up real good for me.
Re: Need input spook rod
I have to agree with a Dobyns Champion 734C.I have two and they are versatile. I throw the super spook with braid. Don't overlook the Fury series.

Re: Need input spook rod
He is looking for a shorter rod, I myself find it difficult to throw spooks on a rod longer than 6'10". That said, Irod makes the Stone Cold Square Bill rod in the Genesis II series, 6'9" fast action rated 3/8oz to 1.5oz, that sounds like a perfect rod for super spooks.Dink Dawg wrote:I have to agree with a Dobyns Champion 734C.I have two and they are versatile. 683 DX would be my suggestion for a shorter spook rod.

Re: Need input spook rod
I'd consider a 6'9" heavy Hammer Rod. They're $164 before the "TT10" discount making them $147.60 shipped to your door. Made in the U.S., great warranty, and an overall outstanding line of rods at their price point. I fish a lot of high end sticks, and the more I fish Hammer Rods, the more impressed I am with the blank performance. I just got back from absolutely crushing Redfish all weekend using the 7'6"MH Hammer Rod, extremely impressive. The 69H does a great job with a super spook... best of luck on your search!

It's perfect for them.chris c wrote:Dobyns 685cb is good for spook, but not sure it is quite enough rod for super spook
It's more rod than the one you recommended, being a 5 power vs 4 power & a higher lure weight rating(1 1/4oz).
The action & length is also better suited towards topwater, as is the shorter handle.
The 5 powered dobyns CB rods handle 1oz like a champion (bad pun intended ).
No offense, but the last rod i'd opt for topwater would be a 7'3 heavy fast. No way that rod was designed for spooks.
I'm sure it'll fish em but... fishing 7'3 rods for topwater ain't where it's at (imo). Maybe if I was really tall and liked punishing my arms & wrists?
Those hammer rods look legit too, and the price is right.

Re: Need input spook rod
Any mh fast action rod will do. I use a duckett white ice 7'3" and it is perfect for spooks. Imo anything longer than 7'3" will be too long and harder to work the bait.
Re: Need input spook rod
Spooky, no offense taken, just trying to help. He asked for a super spook, which is nearly an oz. I too throw a spook on 685cb, but find the 734c a better rod for super spook. That is what it was designed for. It is not a true fast action rod, it actually seems moderate to me.
Re: Need input spook rod
Thanks again for the input. I think the majority of you guys know why I prefer the shorter rods for this bait, but for those who don't, it has to do with the action of the bait. I think the bait works the best with a tip down approach. I will check out the rods that you guys have mentioned so far. The rod I was using had good bb about 5/8 to 3/4 of the way up the rod. and a tip a tiny bit softer then fast, even though the rod I used said fast. Just a little more info.
