g loomis NRX worth $450+?
Hey guys,
I am currently getting rid of most of my casting rods for more of an "all around" MH casting rod. Mostly because I dont have a boat and I carry all of my rods everywhere....
I have been eyeballing g loomis NRX (paired with REVO Premier) for awhile but never had the pleasure of even holding one..I really love split grips and open reel seat for extra sensitivity on the blank...I noticed that the NRX only rated up to 5/8 or 3/4 oz...I sometimes throw some lures all the way up to 1 or 1.5 oz for stripers...including swimbaits...
I know the NRX is all about sensitivity (which is what i want for worms and jigs) but i was just curious if it is beefy enough to throw these lures...
also...is it worth THAT much money? or should I stick to an abu veritas

I just bought a nrx 853c and I really am starting to love that rod. It is extremely sensitive . The rods are so small in diameter and light that you get the feeling that they are fairy wands. This is not the case, they are a lot more powerful than they feel when you actually fish them. This rod was going to be my last purchase for this season of fishing but I love this rod so much, I'm thinking of getting one more.
Either the 873c or 854c---both these rods are rated for the same weight...I was wondering if anyone on the board has experience with either of these rods???

I'm sure the NRX is a great rod. However, I would go custom in the $450+ price range.

I agree 100%Jighead61 wrote:I'm sure the NRX is a great rod. However, I would go custom in the $450+ price range.
I use to get all caught up in high and sensitivity until I stepped back and realized what I personally wanted in a rod. To me it's all about action. Don't get me wrong you do need some sensitivity obviously but it doesn't matter if you can't set the hook and land them.

honestly, I don't think any of the NRX rods are what you are looking for.. they are really rod specific to worm and jigs.. and the split grip is not like other rods, the blank is barely split, i doubt you would even use it, to me, it's more for looks and weight saving on the NRX rod.. neither of fthe 873 or the 854 rods are what you looking for, the 873 is a great football jig rod and the 854 is the great 1/2oz jig rod.. yes the sensitivity is there, but if you plan to have more of an all around rod with the lure rating you want to throw, i think you should look into the G. Loomis MBR844 GLX, Zombie 7'3"XH Heavy Pitching Rod, Daiwa Zillion 7'4"XH Swimbait rod or the Daiwa Steez XBD 7'4"XH Frog Rod.. checkout the reviews on all those rods here in the TT Review Section.. there are Dobyn's rods too but I'm not too familiar with them

Besides nuocmam's recommendations, I would also recommend taking a look at Phenix rods. They make a great product.

The NRX is bottom bouncing technique specific for sure and as such would not be part of my reduce rods and get more versitle. On the other hand, if fishing is 80% plastics then one could argue that bottom bouncers are needed.

I bought a NRX 854 in the fall and I love it, for football jigs and magnum shakey heads. I think it is maxed out around 3/4 of an oz though, so if you are looking to throw baits heavier than that you may want to look else where. The GLX 855 might be a good option for you

I am not loyal to a particular brand...I have dobyns extremes, 2 steez, one compile-x, cumara, st. croix, etc. and I can say with confidence, (even though it is subjective ) the NRX is the most sensitive rod I have. It is noticably more sensitive than the other rods. If that is worth the extra cash, idw. It was worth it to me.

we were talking about that before the site crashed. It was the first batch of rods to hit the stores, the problem has now been fixed. I actually had one of the older rods and they replaced it at no charge.

I have been to Cabelas three times lately and each time I have to fondal the NRX's. They just feel right. Next time I'm there might be the time that one follows me home.
