POWELL MAX 7105mh flip rod for 1oz jigs on 20# FC ?

Post by bluegill » Mon Mar 28, 2011 1:49 am

How would this rod POWELL MAX 7105mh (7'10" rated for 1/4-1&1/4oz.) flipping rod work with 1 ounce jigs on 20# FC line.
HOW IS THE BALANCE ON THIS ROD ? I have a 200e7 or a Chronarch 100b for the job.
I'm interested in other suggestions for this lure & line combo.
I have a BCR855 GLX which is great for this.
I'm looking for a longer rod for the collection.
Thanks for your input.

I wouldn't use it for jigs. Its geared towards punching. It has kinda a parabolic action to it for braid when punchin. I have a E on mine and balance isn't bad I added a chair cap and I believe 3 quarters to balance it.

I can't really recommend a rod as I don't use 1oz jigs or rods that long for jigs together.

I think this rod excels as a punch rod. Could you flip a 1oz jig with it, yes. I think it would work real well for that!

However, I would recommend a Powell Endurance 775C. I was using it this weekend flipping a beaver with a 1/2 ounce tungsten weight, paired with a Shimano Metanium (Chronarch 100B) and 20# Seguar Invizix. It was a pure joy hooking up with a 5 pound largie in the Delta! Really nice rod!!!! It felt pretty good with the Shimano Metanium too. I think for the technique and line you mention the 775c will excel.

+1
I've used the 7105 for punching, jigs, t-rigs and certain swimbaits. It worked well but I think the 775 endurance would be a better dedicated jig rod. The feel and balance of this rod continues to impress me after fishing it for almost 6 months. It's also a good punching rod for those that find the 8ft rods a little big.

Is the Endurance 775 a better rod from a balance perspective & any other than the 765 in the regular MAX series ?
I,m not sold on the purple graphics but I could get past it if the rod is better.

I'm wondering the same thing about the balance of the 775c. I wanted to get a dobyns 765c for flipping jigs this summer mainly because I had heard bad things about the powell 765c balance and wanted the fast action of the dobyns vs the exfast of the powell. All of my rods are powell and if the balance on the endurance series flipping rods is better than the max then I will consider getting the 775 and the 725. Also how fast is the tip on the 775?

The 775C Endurance is a very well balanced rod with a extra fast tip. For me the biggest difference is that the 775 is lighter and has a little more backbone. This is generally the case with the Endurance rods as they have smaller tapers and they are 1/2 to 3/4 of a power higher.

Although I have gotten my 775 on the water yet, this rod seems to be much lighter and more balanced than my 765 max series. The 765 max is still a great all around flippin rod tho because the tip isnt as fast and I like a little slower tip for flippin, especially with braid. The 775 has unbelievable backbone on it and the tip is much faster, its actually going to be my heavy cover frog rod this year and ill punch with it as well if I have too! you wont have any problem getting fish out of the junk with it. I would recommend jumping up to 25 lb test fluorocarbon vs 20 lb tho, just my opinion

I use the 7105 as my flipping stick and I think the rod is great with 20# flouro. In fact I have 20# PLine flouro on mine right now. I don't use 1oz jigs but I do use 3/4oz t rigs and then a beaver on top of that and have zero trouble with that weight. As far as balance I have a Citica E on it and its a little tip heavy, not bad just a little. One more thing I don't think you would have any trouble fishing jigs with this rod.
