Dobyns Extreme 744CX vs 745CX

Post by Moss Boss » Thu Mar 31, 2011 4:34 am

I am looking for a new pitching rod. I typically pitch baits from a 1/4 oz. Sweet Beaver (1/4 on the weight, more if you include the bait), to a 1/2 ounce jig. This is for pitching to wood, rock, light weeds, I already have a heavy action flipping stick for the heavy veg. I was looking at the Champ Extreme series , either the 744 or the 745 and wondered which you would recommend.

Also, will the ful cork handle in either of those models balance better than the split grip?

It may be apples and oranges... but I have the savvy series 734 and it feels great pitching 1/4 ounce jigs with small trailers. It's not my primary application for that rod but it sure feels sweet when I do pitch with it. It's paired with a curado E series and I really like the way it balances out.

I would go with the 744 C. It will work better with the lighter stuff. The 745 is a Mag-heavy is rated 3/8 to 1 1/2 oz. I wouldnt pitch anything lighter then 3/8 oz with the 745 C, just wouldnt load up properlly.

Agree. I wrote almost the same info/opinion in a previous thread about the DX745.

The DX744 is a great rod for moving baits and lighter jigs. I would like to get a DX745 for jigs. Trade a DX744 for a DX745???

I use a 744C with the full handle. It is perfect for what you want to use it for. I haven't compared the balance point between the split grip and the full, but the full handle balances well with my Zillion.

x2 on the 744. I have one with a core 51mg spooled with 20 lb floro. One of my favorite things to pitch is a beaver w/ 1/4 or 3/8 tungsten bullet weight into cover or hopping along the bottom, the rod is light and sensitive plus plenty of power. You wont regret since you already have a heavy rod already.

Full or split, i prefer full grip cause split looks funky to me. Personal perference.

x2, the zillion def. balances better with the full grip.
Get your kids hooked on fishing, and they'll never have any money for drugs or alcohol.
