MBR842C VS DX742C VS BCR???

Post by bassfishing4fun » Sun Apr 17, 2011 3:56 am

OK I "need" a 2 1/2 rod for throwing 1/8oz 6" worms, small grubs, 4" - 5" senko's, small padletails, etc. I already have a MBR782 IMX but I would like something with a faster tip and a touch heaver. I just bought a used DX702C but do not have it yet, after I started reading about this rod I think it might be a lot like my MBR782. I think a Loomis BCR would be a great jig rod but I think I need something more universal to start with. Some help from people that have fished the above rods would be great!!!!

PS I fishing WI lakes and the Mississippi, mostly light cover.

The 842 would be a great choice. Compared to the MBR782 , it is a 2.5 power rod and faster. Your applications are spot on as is a buzzbait. The BCR802 GLX can do some of these apps but I'd go with the 842.

I'd say the DX742C will be very similar in power to a BCR802/852. The Dobyns will be a fast vs the xfast of the GLoomis. You might find that the GLoomis fishes just slightly more powerfully.

Based on the MBR843 & MBR844 vs the 733/743 & 724/744 , I'd say the Dobyns rods would be closer to the MBR actions than the BCR.

The DX702C will be lighter in power than the DX742C for sure.

I haven't fished a MBR842 so I can't comment on the power vs the others.

Good info guys, thanks. Looks like I will be selling my MBR782 or DX702 for a 742 or 842

I have the DX742C and the BCR852 GLX. I bought the BCR first and found it was too whippy for my liking. On the weaker side of the 2 power range, IMO. The DX742 hits the sweet spot for me. It's on the stronger side of the 2 power rods and has a great feel to it. Very sensitive and a pleasure to fish with. It has become one of my favorite rods for sure.

I don't have any 2 power MBR rods to compare to.

You can do a little searching for info, but I don't know of anyone who doesn't really enjoy the Loomis MBR 842 GLX. It's one of those rods that everything really came together to create a very unique and special fishing rod. No doubt it's a winner. Good luck on your search 8-)

The BCR852 is whippy??? That is the only rod I have had in my hands and I can not say i feel its whippy. Now I have not fished with it but have held it in a store and thought it felt great. My only concern was the extra fast tip would have problems with the very light baits.

The BCR 852 GLX is rated from 1/8 oz to 3/8 oz, designed for light jigs, texas rigged worms, shakey heads, and is 7'1" long. If used for it's intended purposes within the lure rating range, which is very accurate for this rod, it doesn't feel whippy at all in my hands. Now if I was trying to throw 1/2 oz spinnerbaits or pointer 100's on a rod designed for lighter bottom contact baits, I suppose it might feel whippy...

That being said, the MBR 842 GLX sounds like the rod you're looking for...

No insult intended, but I don't see how you can form an opinion on the rod without fishing with it. I own that rod, and have for more than a year. I own a lot of other GLX, Dobyn's DX and Kistler rods to compare it to. The above is my honest opinion on it. And I stay within its weight range, and completely understand the BCR lineups intended purpose. IMO, the DX742c is a better rod in every way for lighter bottom contact lures.
