Need a Spinnerbait rod, which Dobyns should I get?

Post by Stratos » Mon Apr 18, 2011 2:35 pm

I need a new spinnerbait rod that is between 7' and 7'4". I have 3 Champion Dobyns, but am open to get an Extreme. I will be using spinnerbaits that weigh 3/8 to 1/2oz. I heard the Dobyns glass rods are good for spinnerbaits also, but wanted some input. I am in the midwest so I generally on average catch around 1 to 2 pound bass with the occasional 5 pounder so I don't need a heavier action rod. I do have a 733c that I use for Senkos, I could use that for Spinners and get a new extreme for Senkos. What should I do? I fish mostly cover and docks.

Thank you

I use a Savvy 703 for my spinnerbaits..I did used a champion, but it's being used for senkos..
I mainly throw 3/8ths and it handles them well..
You might want to step up to a 704c or go longer 733/734

Unless you will be throwing your blades around heavy cover, I highly recommend switching the 733C over to spinnerbait duty and picking up a DX743 for senkos. The 733C is my primary rod for 1/4 - 1/2oz spinnerbaits. It has the perfect action for blades as far as I'm concerned. I also think you will enjoy the slightly faster action and increased sensitivity of the Extreme for senkos.

I second Craiger12's suggestion to use the 733C for spinnerbaits and get a DX743 for Senkos. When I first got my 733C I used it briefly during the earlier part of the year, when there wasn't any weed growth, and it worked well with 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz spinnerbaits. I personally use a 734C for spinnerbaits because I fish in heavy weed growth during much of the year and am fortunate to be able to catch larger bass.

I don't see the point in paying for a DX rod for reaction baits, but I love them for senkos, t-rigs, jigs, etc. As others have said, get a DX as your senko rod and use your champion as the spinnerbait rod.

x2 was thinking the exact same thing. You should be fine with a 733C FH, no point in spending more on a DX. I have a TDZ paired with my 733C FH, well balanced, light, and allows you to really sling that spinnerbait out. If power is a concern, like others have already said, you can always get a 734C. Just pair it with the right reel, and you should be good to go.
Get your kids hooked on fishing, and they'll never have any money for drugs or alcohol.

How do the 763 and 764 compare to the 73X rods? I was thinking of getting a 764 for fishing spinnerbaits and small swimbaits and swimjigs in 20ish feet of water.

I just got the DX743 from Basstackledepot.com for $280. That will be my new Senko rod. My Spinnerbait rod is now the DC733. Thank you for all the help.

Got a DX743 at the end of last season for 5" senko and light Texas rigs. This rod is perfect for both apps. You will not be disappointed. I have a Revo Premier on mine now. It floats in my hand.

I also have a 733C that I use for senkos right now. Later this year, I'm planning on getting either a DX743C or a similar custom rod for my senkos and the 733C will cover most of my spinnerbait duties.

I actually use the 733C for spinnerbaits and lipless cranks on the rare occasion I don't have a senko tied on.

I'm actually going to buy a 764C to try for small swims. There are lures I like to throw they feel a little too big/heavy for my 734 but too light for the 795ML. I'm thinking it will probably be good for "California style" (aka Matt Allen style) swimjigs too.

I've been throwing them on my DX745. I'd rather keep the DX745 dedicated to contact baits specifically jigs. I'm really committed to throwing jigs this year.
