I have an MBR784 GLX that I have been using for an all purpose rod. I throw jigs, rattle cranks and spinnerbaits ect.with it. I have also been tossing some cranks down to 1/4 oz and it seems to be handling these applications well. I have it paired w/a skeet revo. I am wondering if the loomis crankbait series rods like the CBR785 are that much better at throwing cranks vs. the MBR784. The 784 seems to be a more moderate action than my spin jig rods? I do not want anything less than a MH rod for cranks because I throw some large stuff esp. in the fall. I have been seriously thinking about picking up a BCR803 and designating that rod for jig and worm fishing only. So if I were to go that route I would like to use the 784 for crankin duties. Please tell me if I'm crazy or have some of you all used the MBR series rods as crank rods? Thanks.

P.S. I can't rock out TT style this time and get both the CBR and BCR rods. My budget won't allow it.

keep the 784 for worms, jigs and spinnerbaits and get the CBR for cranks. the 784 heavy may be a tad stout for giving cranks that seductive dance and your less apt @ losing fish with a mod/fast action cranking stick.

A lot depends on where crankin' lies on your priority list. If its a staple technique for you, then I think you should be getting a CBR.

BCR's - good feel bait rods
MBR's - good all around rods
CBR's - good crankin' rods

I think looking at how much time you spend doing each will tell you which rods you should have.

Jeez. I thought I liked a fairly stout stick for cranking, but its hard to imagine throwing a 1/4 oz crank on the MBR 784! I really like the now discontinued CBR 756 for larger shallow cranks and spinnerbaits. The closest current production rod to it is the Cumara Reaction Series CUC63H. I think it might be the ticket for the way you like to fish. The CBR 785 is another outstanding cranking stick with a good amount of backbone that would likely work well for you. I'd dedicate your 784 to jigs and worms and get yourself one of the rods I mentioned.
I do some cranking with my MBR rods - really like the MBR 782 and MBR 842 for cranking duties, and have used the 783 and 843 on occasion, but not very often...

I use the MBR782 or 842 for most of my cranking. I do use the 843 for larger lipless cranks (5/8 - 3/4 oz) and for ripping grass. The 784 seems a bit stiff... but heck, I've caught fish on the bigger lipless crankbaits using the 844 on rare occasions (it's not the ideal rod for this application, but there's nothing that says you can't fish it for cranks)
