Re: football head jig setup?
The thing is about the powell 705c is i like using that rod for pitching jigs and plastics. and i dont like changing back and forth. so what i think im gunna do is use the dx744 i just got for this, then put some 50-65lb braid on the powell and make it my pitching rod. im 6'4 so i like a longer rod in general. and espessally in deeper water.
might pick up a revo premier for the 744? anyone have some input on this reel? id be matching it with either 15lb or 20lb tatsu.
and thanks guys for all the comments its much apreciated!

Re: football head jig setup?
I use the 2010 premiere on my dx784 with 15lb trilene 100% flouro and so far I have been happy with its performance and feel.
Re: football head jig setup?
I have to disagree the dx784 balances just fine with the premiere and even without a reel mounted its not tip heavy and thats what makes it so special for a rod of this length. everyone has a different take on balance, but I never heard anybody say this rod was tip heavy.ogrich31 wrote:Here's what I'm using but trying to find another setup that's better balanced at the moment:
DX784ML
2010 Revo Premier
17lb Pline Halo
Like others have said, a switch to braid will bump up sensitivity tremendously. Any of the rods out there will do, really. If you really want more balanced, your best bet would be to go custom. Many people have said that Dobyns rods balance out very well. That isn't the case for my DX784 though. Out of the few Dobyns rods I have (765Flip, 806, 705CB, and a spinning rod), the DX784 is the most tip heavy rod. But it's also a 7'8" rod, so it would be hard to balance that rod out without sacrificing more weight.
If I were you, I'd try out braid first before you get into any other rods. I'm sure your Powell 705c is a great rod already.

I'm confused isn't the 854 hvy 7'1" rated for 14-20 lb. & 5/16-3/4oz on paper would seem to be more stout than the 873?bronzefly wrote:Yes - 873 without a doubt. It's more stout than the 854 and has the most backbone of any current NRX rod... that being said, i'm looking forward to some heavier powered models soon!Pin wrote:Speaking of NRX Bronzefly, have you fished the 854 vs the 873? Trying to decide which one to get for jigs up to 3/4 oz. in heavier weeds.
I just received my 854 and haven't had a chance to fish it yet..

Re: football head jig setup?
The 873 is a CRR, not a JWR. Like the BCR GLX rods, the two carolina rig models - BCR 874 and 875 - were both significantly more powerful than the BCR 854 or BCR 855 for example.lpquick wrote: I'm confused isn't the 854 hvy 7'1" rated for 14-20 lb. & 5/16-3/4oz on paper would seem to be more stout than the 873?

Side by side the 873 is a little heavier powered than the 854 - both great rods though!

Re: football head jig setup?
When I have people asked me about CRR Loomis rods, my best description is that the CRR's rate out about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 powers higher than their label rating. If youve ever fished the BCR 874 CRR GLX, you know that it is AT LEAST 5+ in power compared to other rods in the BCR line (and I could use the BCR 875 CRR as a broom stick replacement). I think the 873 CRR NRX fishes like a 4.25 to 4.50 power rod...Just something Loomis does with their CRR technique rods...To get space between the action of my first 4 NRX casting rods that I purchased, I got two 853s and two 873 NRXs. I'm gonna give them some time before I run out and try to fill in the complete line up (although I have the feeling I'll end up with an 854 to fill that gap and an 893 for long casting lighter bottom baits)--I will fill in the blanks after more experience and trial and error...and maybe wait to see what's new at ICAST....We are all 95% sure more NRXs are coming.bronzefly wrote:The 873 is a CRR, not a JWR. Thanks for spelling it out for me, I understand the differences now.

Re: football head jig setup?
Just a quick additional note...I think Loomis underestimates the recommended lure weight on many of their rods. The 873 is rated a 3/4oz...It can handle plenty more than that, I think...just my opinion.

Re: football head jig setup?

I might go DX745 for piitching and footballs

Re: football head jig setup?
Just curious...I don`t use alot of football heads. What would be different about a football head rod compared to other jigs ? I use the same rod for jigs regardless of type whether it`s grass, wood, rock or style of head. Legend Extreme XC76mhc. If I`m swimming a jig I might drop to a 7' mh.
Re: football head jig setup?
To me, its more how you retrieve the jig (football vs arkie vs swimjig). Pick the rod to match how you fish 'em.SteveDB wrote:What would be different about a football head rod compared to other jigs ?
For football jigs, I just drag 'em. When fishing arkie heads, I usually pitch 'em out & drag, hop or pop/swim 'em back. Footballs are often fished deep. Arkies are usually shallow. Footballs I use in the foothill lakes/reservoirs. Arkies I'm using in the Delta.

thats the same thing I do ,one rod will do it all.SteveDB wrote:Just curious...I don`t use alot of football heads. What would be different about a football head rod compared to other jigs ?
